Laying in the shade under the thick canopy of leaves that the Wilds provides, Bhram tosses and turns in his twisted blanket. His entire body covered in cold sweat, his breathing ragged as his mind battles the nightmares in his head.
FLASH, a pulse of magical energy bursts from Mistress Selina, and washes across her followers and the Ogres alike. When the wave of energy rolls across a living creature, they scream, blood curdling and filled with pain. As the wave washes past them, nothing is left but a pile of dust. The lead Ogre managed to grab the horse, and pull it in front of himself, shielding himself from the brunt of the blast.
When the light of the magical burst faded, all that was left was Mistress Selina, the lead Ogre, Bhram and another servant. Mistress Selina was gravely wounded, and she had dropped to a knee while recovering from the spell. The Ogre smiled a toothy grin, thinking the battle was his. Suddenly Bhram and the other servant charge from the rear of the wagon, weapons held high and screaming a hoarse battle-cry. The other servant managed to get to the Ogre first, and was rewarded by having his torso smashed in by the massive spiked Ogre club. Dodging past the corpse of the other servant Bhram slammed his weapon into The Ogre, but he didn't even seem to notice.
Mistress Selina was casting another spell, and the Ogre closed the distance and backhanded her across the face. The bright multi-coloured threads of magical energy faded as she collapsed to the Forest floor. Leaping as high as he could Bhram smashes his weapon into the back of the Ogre's skull, and the creature collapses in a heap.
Oddly, each time the nightmare has replayed in your mind tonight, this was not the part that scared you right down to your bones. Even just thinking about what happened next causes a tremor of fear to run through you from head to toe.
After making sure that the non-dusted Ogres were well and truly dead, you return to Mistress Selina and say, "Oh Mistress how I would love to take your life with my own hand. For you are going to die, I can't stop that now. Tis a shame that you didn't treat me better, for I might have been able to save you had I been better trained, or had a proper healing kit. Fear not, I will not murder you. Your death shall be of the wounds that were inflicted upon you by your own greed. Rest now Mistress. Do not try to speak, it only uses what little strength you have left. As you die, I want you to see that it was I, the one with foul blood that was holding you in his hands, trying to help you. May the divine spirit that you follow take pity upon your soul."
Although during your waking hours, your mind tells you that you held her until she slipped into the afterlife. You can't hide from the truth hidden in your dreams...
Mistress Selina's eyes snap open suddenly, and her mouth forms a cruel smile, "You foul blooded idiot, do you think I would let your incompetence, and Ogres kill me?" She coughs, and flecks of blood appear around her lips, "This is all part of my plan" She reaches up, and curls her fingers into your hair. Yanking your face closer to hers with remarkable strength considering her current situation, she closes her eyes, and begins to chant. The glowing threads of magic surround her, and infuse her until she begins to glow with the raw power of her spell. "I will leave you with one last gift you foul blooded retch... my... dying... curse..." As she trails off she places her hand upon your face, and you feel like you just got slapped by ten Ogres. Your vision swims, and black flecks creep in around the edges of your vision.
You wake twisted in your blanket, and shuddering from the memory of your nightmares. Did she simply die in your arms, or did she really cast something on you as she died? Looking at your reflection in a small puddle of water, you can't see any mark where her hand touched your face. You do however feel her hand, as if she had just slapped you only moments before.
The sun's diffused rays trail across the forest floor, you've slept well past day break, and you can feel the minds of the Shaal scouts searching the area for anyone that doesn't belong.

Before I pay any attention to the scouts I am going to make sure that the horse is alright. If he doesn't need any special attending to, I turn my thoughts to the closest scout that I can hear.
"Over here(broadcasting my surroundings) I am in need of assistance."
While I make sure that the horse is in a spot to where he can graze, I will keep broadcasting to the closest scout. Without going more than bout ten meters in any direction from camp, I am going to attempt to scavenge up some food. If I find something edible that doesn't require cooking I will eat it until the scouts make it to me.

Looking over your horse, it seems just fine. No special attention needed. When you broadcast your location, and request for assistance you get a response instantly, 'Hold steady, we will be there in a moment.' You don't even have time to search the nearest bushes for anything to eat before the bushes some thirty feet off part to reveal a band of several club wielding naked men. Moments later, the men form a loose circle around you, and your horse. About half of the men are facing you, while the other half watches the surrounding woods. 'What seems to be the trouble?' the lead man sends.

I am the only survivor of a trading expedition, I need to get back to town quickly please. Can you also tell me whom this Master is? I send, showing the new mark upon my hands.
Looking over to the horse and wagon, Myself, and what you see here are all that managed to survive the ogre attack. To make matters worse, my mistress, Mistress Selina, was also upon this expedition. May she rest in peace. I would greatly appreciate an escort back to town. There is a lot of explaining that I'm going to have to do. Bhram visibly sighs heavily Is there anything else that could go wrong for me today? I think, without sending this time.

The lead man steps closer, and examines your hand, 'This appears to be the mark of Master Goram.' the man sends, adding where the master lives, and how to get there from the gate.
When the lead man hears of your dead mistress, you think you see a slight smile touching the sides of the mans lips. It's gone so quickly that you're not sure it was ever truly there in the first place. 'I can't provide you with an escort, but from here until you reach town is heavily patrolled by the scouts. You shouldn't run into any trouble if you keep your link active so people know that you belong.' The man nods, as if that settles everything, and gestures toward town. Moments later, he and his vanish into the surrounding tress.

Alright, I shall keep my link active all the way back to town. Thank you for your assistance. Master Goram will be hearing from me just as soon as I can make it to town.
With that I am letting this fine scout get back to his duties, and making ready to leave for town. Just as soon as I reach the gate I am going to follow his directions in getting to my new Master's home.

As you get closer to town with your link active, you feel growing numbers of others thoughts gently pinging off your mind. By the time you're within fifty feet of the gate, the feeling is constant, rather than repeating. You reach the seemingly unguarded gate without issue, and enter into the Shaal community proper.
Following the directions given, and sending out a few minor questions here and there, you arrive at Master Goram's estate. Like all Masters and, Lords that live within the city proper, Master Goram has a lush estate. The entire place is covered in lush gardens, and a cobble stone path wide enough for two wagons abreast leads to the front doors. The winding path leads past a fountain depicting a naked man and woman, embracing in an almost erotic, but still socially acceptable way.

As I move along the cobble stone path, Master, I am Brahm one of your newest acquisitions. I am approaching Your estate doors. I have supplies that I was able to save. May I ask to be able to show them to you personally?
When I get to where I am close to the front entrance to the manor home itself I will wait upon the path with the horse for further instructions, or Master Goram himself.

If you were to describe the sending you receive in response as if it were a voice, you would use words like commanding, stern, powerful. As the sending explodes into your mind, the thoughts form rapidly, 'I know who you are servant of Selina, and I always know where you are located. You carry a wagon load of platinum bars, which you will give to the man standing by the large double doors to your left.'
Looking around, you easily spot a smaller ornate building which is clearly a stable. Standing just outside the doors is a well muscled naked man, with long straight black hair which hangs in a heavy braid almost to his waist.

With a very subtle gulp, Yes Master. Immediately and quickly I turn towards my left. Not quite sure how if the brute near those doors is hostile or not, I head straight towards him. When the horse gets about fifteen feet or so from this brute, I will slow him some . Greetings I have been instructed to give this horse and wagon to you. Right now I visibly look nervous almost scared. Not knowing what Master Goram is like other than he has a commanding voice, is quite a bit frightful to me right now.

The man nods, and says, "The Master prefers if we speak using our voices, so that he isn't disturbed by our constant sendings. I am called Batch. I will be showing you around the estate, and informing you of The Master's rules." Looking you up and down, he continues, "I can see that you're nervous, let's get you out of all that armour and clothing so we can get started."
He waits while you remove everything, right down to your skin. (keep the equipment on your sheet, but you won't currently have anything on you.) As you remove things, he places them neatly in the wagon. Once everything is aboard he leads the wagon into the stables. The two of you un-hitch the horses, and tend to them before heading around the house to a narrow flight of stairs which leads down to the basement. "This is the only entrance we are allowed to use, unless instructed otherwise by The Master." Batch locks eyes with you to make sure you understand before heading down the stairs, and into the house.
The door at the base of the stairs is made from thick wooden planks, reinforced with bands of iron. There are no frills, nothing artistic about this door. It is clearly designed with security in mind. Once inside Batch gives you a quick tour of the servant's quarters which consists of four rooms: A large central chamber which you enter into from the servant's stairs, two bedrooms branch off this chamber, one for the male servants, one for female servants, and lastly a small shared bathroom. "No male is allowed in the female dorm, and no female in the male dorm. Servants are not allowed to have any form of sexual relations, unless The Master gives someone to you as a reward for something you've done." Batch explains.
The central room has a long table with benches for seating, a thick rug with several large pillows near a descent sized hearth. A large kettle rests over a small fire, and the smells of tea suffuse the room. Three naked servants recline on the pillows, playing a game of cards, while a naked woman sits by herself at the table sipping a steaming cup of tea.
Batch moves over to beside the door leading into the bathroom, "Head inside and get cleaned up, but don't take to long. When you're done you will meet The Master, and he doesn't like to be kept waiting. He also doesn't like dirty servants."

With a soft barely noticeable sigh, I get all of my newly acquired armor and clothing off and stacked neatly into the wagon. "I understand and shall do my best not to disturb Master." As we move around the house I start placing into memory exactly where everything is. I don't want to forget where anything is and displease my new Master.
Looking over at my fellow servants, "Good morning. I am Bhram."
After being instructed to get cleaned up in haste, "Understood I shall be out shortly." After I close the door in the bathroom Not wanting to anger Master upon our first meeting. I make all the haste I possibly can to get myself cleaned and presentable before my new Master. Taking a moment or two to look over myself after I have cleaned and dried, "sigh"(thinking to himself) hopefully these bruises will fade away soon. They are a bit unsightly and I don't want to disappoint Master already. Well here goes.
Walking out of the bathroom all nice and clean, I turn toward where I last saw Batch. "Alright I am as clean as I can possibly be." In the softest thought I can possibly muster to myself, I just hope Master is pleased with me. It would be so nice not to get beaten anymore. When we leave to go see the Master, I will stand as tall and proud to be here as I can. Making every attempt to appear both confident and capable.

(Could you post your current HP, AC (T, FF), F/R/W in your signature? Then I don't have to look it up when I want to know it. Just remember to keep it up to date as we play.)
When you greet the other servants, the three men playing cards look up at you, one smiles, while the other two nod. The woman lowers her tea cup to smile warmly at you, and when Batch isn't looking she slips you a wink, and her smile turns from warm to smoldering. Nobody speaks to you however, and a after their brief greetings the men go back to their game.
The bath room is a large room divided into three sections. To the left and right are low, large barrels for bathing. The central area has two rows of privies. You note that there is a line etched into the stone down the center of the central room, this line divides the entire room into two perfect symmetrical halves.
Movement in one of the tubs attracts your attention to a woman bathing. As you look at the woman, one of the card playing men enters, and begins using one of the privies. The reason for the line becomes suddenly apparent. Even in the bathroom the men and women do things separately.
Once you're done in the bath room you find Batch seated, chatting with the tea drinking woman. As you exit the room he nods to you, and heads for the servants stairs. "Last chance for questions before meeting The Master."

Making a small note of the servant with the smoldering look as I enter the bathroom.
On the way up the stairs, "Actually I do have a couple of questions. Can I expect to get chastised or beaten this morning? Does Master like to have his servants beaten? Mistress Selina made sure I was beaten almost every day just cause I was born. How hard can I expect Master to be upon me? As you can well imagine I am rather nervous. Though on the other side of the copper I am also rather surprised, I figured that Master would just have me put to work right away. It is somewhat refreshing that He wants to meet me so fast."
With that I continue following Batch, listening to his replies as we proceed to Master.

Batch looks at you with a sympathy in his eyes, "Your prior Master was a hard woman to work for I assume." Placing a hand on your shoulder he continues, "The Master doesn't beat us at all." He repeats himself when you don't seem to understand, "Not at all Bhram, not once. Not even when you make a mistake. The Master still punishes, but not with beatings. Wounds from beatings heal, after punishment from The Master you will strive to do better."

With a rather large sigh of relief, "Those are the most wonderful words that I have heard in years! Yes Mistress Selina was extremely hard to work for. At least for all I saw it was all about our blood line. I do not understand how it works, but from what I was told certain family's pass the gift of magic to there children and on down there family line. I was born here in town from a family who was brought into the society. Neither my father or mother had the gift of magic. I have also been told that some people just figure out how to use magical energy. Neither of these has ever happened to me. There were many days that I had wished that I had untapped magical powers that would show themselves when I got my daily beatings. Sadly thought it never happened. (I get a long sad look upon my face.) As Mistress Selina, may her soul rest peacefully, told me I have bad blood. Those whom have bad blood must be punished. I saw in front of a mirror, that had some sort of magic used upon it, my mother, father, and all of my brothers and sisters get butchered by the same foul creatures that attacked the expedition that I was upon. After Selina got hurt, it took all the will that I could muster not to finish her by my own hand. Even more will to actually make the attempt to save her." Pausing in my rambling for a moment, I look up at Batch. Sighs deeply, "Sorry I am rambling on and delaying us from getting to where Master wants us."
I get a soft semi big smile upon my face as I think about how much better life is going to be now that I do not have a tyrant for a Master. I shall continue to follow Batch to Masters location.

Batch shakes his head slowly, "You don't fully understand, wounds from beatings heal. Punishments from The Master..." He trails off as if listening to some unheard voice, then he nods, "He tires of waiting, this way." Batch leads you to a large set of double doors, and gestures for you to enter. Then he takes a seat at a nearby bench to wait for your return, or be handy for a summons you can't be sure.
When you open the double doors, you find yourself in a well appointed library. The room itself has twenty foot ceilings, and it's rounded walls form a near circle about twenty feet across. Each wall from floor to ceiling is covered in books. The only place that doesn't have books is the double doors you just entered from. There are even several free-standing bookshelves throughout the room forming walls of leather bound tombs. At the center of this massive room sits a glass case with a massive grimoire. The book is chained to the thick marble pedestal in which the glass case rests.
Light pours in from the glass ceiling, but seems to be focused somehow on a massive desk behind the grimoire's case. Sitting at the desk is a man in his middle years, most of his hair is a dark black with gray creeping in near the side burns. He is dressed in a simple black silk robe, and his dark brown eyes bore into you as soon as you look at him. His gaze seems to see through you, weighing and measuring everything about you. Peeking into your secrets, and knowing everything you want to hide...

As I move to enter the room that Batch has led me to. "Thank you Batch, your advice has been most helpful." with that I take a moment to mentally prepare myself and enter the room.
Upon entering the room I am stunned for a moment by it's awesome beauty. Snapping back to propriety a split moment later I continue to cross the room taking in all of it's wondrous beauty.
Stopping an appropriate distance in front of the desk, I stand tall and proud. (not so tall and proud that I appear to be overstepping my boundaries, if bowing is appropriate I shall do so.)
"Good afternoon Master. (I am assuming it would be afternoon by now, if it isn't insert morning instead) I am greatly honored to be in your presence. I am ready most willing and extremely able to serve!" Realizing that I might be rambling I quickly close my mouth and wait. Master will speak when he is darn good and ready. Till then I shall stand there dutifully.

Batch only nods at your thanks, and gestures with his head toward the double doors. His look imploring you to enter without delay. After you enter, and finish rambling, your new master simply looks at you. He looks at you for several minutes, and the entire time you can all but feel him rooting around inside your mind with his eyes. Your skin crawls when his eyes flash and trails of luminous blue-purple smoke begin to trail from his tear ducts toward you. After a moment the smoke encircles your head, and you have no choice but to breath some of it in. The smoke tingles your throat, like the beginnings of a sneeze that just won't happen. A moment later, the double doors open and Batch gestures you out of the room.

I walk out looking even more confused than when I entered. Before speaking to Batch I will make sure that I am clear of both doors so that they may close and leave Master to whatever it is he was doing.
A moment after I am clear of the doors, "Um Batch. What just happened? I didn't get told anything. I know Master actively rooted about me, learning everything that he wanted to know. Then cast a spell of some sort upon me. Then you were waiting for me on this side of the doors. Nothing seems to make any sense to me right now."
I look extremely confused and a little bit worried.

Batch gently closes the doors behind you, his gaze shifting to you as he turned around, something in his eyes silences you for the moment. After leading you back down to the servant's quarters he turns back to you, nodding.
After hearing your question, he smiles, "You have been tested. The master knows all that he needs to about you, and what you're able to do for him. He doesn't need to talk to you, or tell you anything. You will be allowed a few days to settle in with the rest of us, and get to know the rules of the house." Batch shrugs, "I have no real answers for you, but you're free from duties until two high-suns from now. Enjoy it while you can."

For the first time in years I have a happy expression upon my face. With a more upbeat tone in my voice. "Thank you Batch you have been a considerable help. I shall enjoy every moment of the next couple of high-suns, I am sure that I won't get days to which I do not have duties often. Have a wonderful afternoon! I have a lot to learn in short amount of time."
With that I politely turn and go into the servants living area. My first order of business is to familiarize myself with the layout of the males side of the area. I will also attempt to find a bunk(sleeping area) that is not already occupied, as I do not want to make any bad relations upon my first day here. Being that I have no personal possessions to place at it, I will check out whom all is still present in the quarters.

Batch simply nods, a slight quirk at the side of his mouth which could be the start of a smile, gone so quickly that you're not sure it was ever really there to begin with. The man joins a woman whose hair is still slightly damp, and you realize that it's the same woman you saw in the bath earlier. She has a book held closed in her hands, a finger stuck between the pages to mark her place.
The three men are still playing cards together on the other side of the room, and the woman with the smoldering look is no longer in the main chamber. When you head into the male side bed chambers, it's clear right away that things are kept clean and orderly. Each bed is made, and there's nothing out of place in the entire room. You can see a few personal touches at several of the bunks, and one has a folded sign which reads, "Bhram" sitting in the center.
Returning to the main chamber the smoldering woman is back, pouring herself another cup of tea, while the bath lady with the book is reading once again. Batch is nowhere in sight, and the other men are still playing cards.

Pausing at my bunk for a moment, I make sure that it is completely in order, with everything extra tidy. Then I return to the main room.
I quietly take a seat at the table just down from the three guys playing cards. I take a few minutes to observe the card playing.(Int-figure out card game (1d20 + 1): 14 + 1 = 15) While they are in between hands I will take a moment to introduce myself. "Hello everyone I am Bhram. I was a runner for late Mistress Selina. I would like to ask everyone for any advice or suggestions that can be offered to help me fit in here with everyone."

Your bunk is in perfect order, requiring nothing to remain so, however you still pick off a tiny speck of lint - just in case. When you enter back into the main room, you can feel the smolder from the woman again before you even spot her with her steaming cup of tea. The book woman is reading, seemingly oblivious of your return, much like the men who continue playing with nothing more than nods and brief smiles when you sit by them.
Their game is a simple one, each player is dealt thirteen cards, and whomever has the seven of dragons plays that card first. The object is to get rid of all your cards before everyone else. You get points for whatever is left in everyone else's hands when you go out. To get rid of a card, you must either start a new seven pile, or play a card above or below and existing card. During your first full round of observation, the person who's cards you can see groans when he looks at his cards, and you can see two aces, and two kings in his hand. He looses, badly.
When you introduce yourself, you get a collection of responses, "Welcome Bhram, I'm Notch - a hunter.", "Bhram, I'm Nettie - a collector.", and lastly, "Change - merchant." The first spoken warmly, the second indifferently, the last spoken in a monotone.
Notch continues after Change speaks, "To fit in, just do your job. The Master is easy enough to keep happy if you just do your job. As for advice... Enjoy your freedom, you have a bit of time off I hear, enjoy it while you can. Get out into the city, you will be stuck in here with us soon enough."

Before standing up I am giving everyone a moment to finish giving me any advice they may have.
Carefully standing up from the table as not to bump the cards about, "Thank you, I shall enjoy the time that I have been given. Have a good afternoon."
As I turn to leave our dormitory area I am taking note of the smoldering lady. Specifically I am paying just enough attention to attempt to discern if she is smoldering just in my direction or if her smoldering is at everyone in general.
After I have paused for a moment I am heading out into town. I am headed to the furthest out merchant that I used to run for. I am not in a big hurry. I want to take in the sights and sounds of town, it will be the first time that I have not had to hurry somewhere.

As you stand Change speaks up again, still in a monotone, "Speak to Etsy if you want some spending money." He nods to the smoldering lady, "It won't be much, and it count's double against your debt, but at least you will be able to take in a show, or eat something while you're out." Your fears that Change disliked you because of his monotone voice fades some, and you think that he speaks like that to everybody. You get a collection of good-byes again friendly, indifferent and monotone as you take your leave.
When you turn to Etsy, you lock gazes and feel a stirring inside. That woman's gaze boils the blood. As far as you can tell, she was staring at you the entire time you were talking to the boys. At least the feeling of smoldering never left that space between your shoulder blades.
You still headed out, or do you want some spending money first?

When you exit the servants dormitory, you can see Batch unloading the wagon you brought back from the wilds. He has 'your' gear set aside in a neat pile, and several chests sit open that Batch is loading the platinum bars, and other trade goods into. Heading to the gate, a pair of naked servants with long cudgels open a man sized door set into the larger gate to let you out into the city. They nod to you and firmly close the door after you're through.
As you travel through the city, you bring to mind a map of sorts to plan your route. Remembering that the city is broken down into five districts: The Palace in the center, Residential to the east, The Market to the north, Entertainment to the south, and the Industrial district to the west. Knowing that access to the Palace district is limited to the Emperor, Lords, and their servants you plan your trip through the Residential district heading mostly north, with a slight western lean.
The merchant you seek is an apothecary who lives just enough close enough to the city to still be considered part of it, but far enough out that no Master or Lord is willing to make the trip themselves. With Mistress Selina's constant potion making, you came here often. Master Hedge, the owner of the shop would often get you to make deliveries for him to various Estates, or shops throughout the city on your travels, and he's responsible for more than half of the debt you've already managed to pay down.
(I need you to post a link to your character in the Characters board here on Veth.)

As I pass Batch I nod while smiling "Have a nice afternoon Batch."
"Good afternoon," I say to the guards at the gate as they let me pass.
With a spring in my step I proceed on my northwestern route across town. While not being in a exceptional hurry I am not taking all afternoon to get there. 'Boy Master Hedge is going to be surprised when I show up.' I quietly think to myself. I also keep my eye open for any possible quick options to make a few coins. Stopping along my way at several shops that I . haven't had the opportunity to visit before. I am also keeping a pretty close eye out for any possible unlawful activity.
While I look for a bit around one of the shops, I pause for a minute in front of a small trinket and think of Etsy, quietly wondering if she would like this. Then with sly grin, I quietly whisper one of these days when I have my debt paid off I will find out!
