bert swims a bit closer so that more is illuminated as he draws his mace from his belt. not to sure about getting to close to this thing but not wanting venos to fight alone. holding just hoping to get a clear shot at its head.

Venos grabs the rope and hauls himself down to the floor. The Zombie follows, but Venos kicks off the ground and stabs it in the other side of it's neck as he passes by. The creature swims directly into the floor of the chamber, and can't seem to right itself.
(Bert, you delay to get a clear shot. No time like the present. You should have disadvantage from being under water, but the Zombie stunned itself on the ground with that nat 1 so roll normally. Venos, you will have advantage on your next attack.)
Init Venos 13 (Attack) Bert 12 (Delay) Zombie Nat 1+3=4 (miss), 6/22, stunned for next action.

Seeing a clear shot he swings his mace at the head of the zombie in an attempt to bash its skull in. though swinging a weapon underwater is definetly a strange feeling and he isnt sure he likes this.

The larger pocket of bubbles escapes his nostrils as wave of frustration washes through him. This fight was going well, but taking longer than he'd hoped. Though now he had Pemberton's help down here. Making the most out of the creature's disorientation and the distraction of teamwork on the zombie. Venos lunges with the dagger once more.

The zombie shifts it’s gaze to the bearer of the light source, leaving it exposed for your attack. You slip in close and draw your blade across the back of it’s neck, severing the nerves between the head and the body. Almost instantly the body goes limp, and just floats there in the now cloudy red or purple water, depending on whether the walls are glowing or not. Your lungs are screaming for air Venos, do you trust Bert’s magic or scramble for your barrel? DC 10 athletics to get to your barrel before you have to breath.

Feeling the burning in his lungs, Venos swims toward the barrel while pulling the rope to bring the barrel down to meet it half way. Popping his head into the air pocket, he gasps air. Exhaling and inhaling heavily. As his breathing settles, he takes a deep breath and swims back down to collect the body. Hooking the corpse's arm and swimming it toward the surface.
Once above the surface, he asks Pemberton to help switch the harness from himself to the corpse so that the novices can lift it out.

You almost make it to the barrel, but your first gasping breath is taken while you mouth is still yet in the water. Cold water floods your lungs, and a moment of panic sets in before you realize that you're not coughing, or sputtering for air. You pop you head into the barrel and take a breath of actual air, and the water flows smoothly out of your lungs on your exhale. Tentatively you dip your head once more and breath the water itself. Seems like the spell worked after all. Between the two of you, you manage to retrieve the corpse, and bring it to the dangling rope for the novices to haul up. When you blink you can still see that slow blue glow. What was that place?

"i want to go back and investigate that blue glow." mentions bert as they finish securing the corpse. by now he has realised that his spell has worked and is feeling rather unstopable and confident.

Turning to Bert, "you should go up next. I'll take the last lift. After all the lifting today, I'm sure your novices would appreciate the lightest person last."
Venos looks down briefly. Curious about where that latch could lead. A shiver runs then as he recalls the feeling of expelling the water from his lungs. It was an experience. Looking back up, trying push those thoughts aside for now. He had a job to finish first, and another one already waiting. "Sure, but we should be quick. No idea when/if the necromancer will be back."

" i shouldnt be long." he says as he goes back into the water. (recasting light if needed) before swimming down to the bottom (assuming breath water is still active) he swims down to where the glowing blue lights are to investigate it.

You swim down the thirty foot tunnel and find a round room like the others, only the tunnel enters through the roof of the chamber. You see the circle set into the floor, the seam that crosses the circle, and the glowing circular divots in the walls. Aside from what I described and the blood and bits of zombie flesh floating around in the water, this room is empty.

bert swims down to investigate the circle set in the floor and the seam that crosses it. trying to figure out if this could be used as an escape hatch but figuring it probably just leads into another water filled cave. Glancing around once more he swims over to the glowing divots. Taking the time to study them to figure out what is causing the glowing.

Taking lungs full of air, Venos follows Bert underwater. Only swimming down the tunnel until he is just within the underwater room. He wasn't sure how long the spell worked, and didn't want to have lungs full of water when it ended. He keeps an eye on the surroundings as his caster friend investigated.

Carefully checking the rounded area at the top of the room, Venos finds that the room is clear of any further restless corpses. Bert finds that each of the divots in the wall are actually a little different from one another. They remind you of a keyhole. Perhaps once the appropriate objects are placed in the divots the seal on the floor will be released.

Venos held his breath as long as possible. Only giving into relying on the waterbreathing spell when his lungs could hold out no longer. Then came the strange sensation as he tried to relax his muscles and allow the water to fill his lungs.
Watching as caster finished his investigation, and started back up toward the entrance. As soon as Pemberton motions upward, Venos was nodding and swimming toward the surface. Breaking the surface, he quickly worked on expelling the liquid from his body. Trying to talk when he's breathing, and got company, "learn anything new?"

"the little divots look like keyholes perhaps there are things hidden here that would fit in the keyholes and open the seal on the floor." he says as he looks at him. struggling to get used to the sensation of having to get water out of his lungs with out feeling like he is sufficating from it,

"Perhaps. I did do some searching last time I was here, however I wasn't looking for 'keys'. They might be hidden around here, if they aren't in the possession of the mystery necromancer." Venos glances up the exit, "why don't we see to the bodies first. They might give us clues as to with whom or what we are dealing. Then you and I can make plans on how to deal with the dark caster. We can also look into why the adventurers were down here in the first place, and what we might expect beyond that latch."

Breathing air again feels natural, though once you got used to it the spell itself actually felt like normal breathing, even though you were under water. Maybe a little thicker, like breathing somewhere really really humid. Less pleasant was breathing in water with little bits of corpse floating around in it.

Nods, "yeah. I met a caster before we left that might be able to help with cleaning. I'm not sure if your divine magic can accomplish the same."
He helps Bert with the harness, and then works getting into his own. When they're ready, he calls up the novices to pull them up.

At the top of the ascent, Venos makes a point of thanking the novice who did most of the work pulling them up. "I appreciate the help. I've had climb that by myself last time I was here. You lads are welcome on my next expedition... whenever that happens to be."
He calls over Fang and gives him lots of pets and ear scratches. "You too, good boy. Glad you kept our crew safe." After Pemberton finishes examining the bodies, Venos does his part of loading them onto the cart. Then adding the barrel onto the cart, and collecting any of the rope that were brought by him. "If we're done here, for now, let's head back to Clifton." He lets the crew pulling the cart lead their way out... in case he needs to push.

In total there were five bodies. Four belonging to the adventurers that you sought, and another. The other was dead much longer, the progression of decay was much more pronounced. Three of the adventurer’s seem to have been badly burnt, and the last appears to have drowned. At least that’s the conclusion you draw once Venos informs you that the wounds on the body were caused by him, once the body was already dead.
The novices seem to appreciate your thanks, and Fang definitely appreciates your scritches. The bodies are loaded into the cart and the process to get back to Clifton begins. “Tell us what happened down below. We all tried to guess based on what we hauled up, but we want to hear it from you Sir.”

"We found the team of adventures we were sent to find. Sadly they were all dead, though whatever the cause, a couple of them refused to stay dead. They were walking dead, and we had to put them to rest." Venos speaks mournfully. Moved over the loss of seemingly able-bodied adventurers. Then he tilts his head slightly, "the bisected body. She is an unknown. It would seem she died some time before the others.
"Then Bert showed his amazing skill casting a difficult ritual spell. It allowed us to find and inspect a mysterious feature. We need to investigate if it's tied to why the adventurers were here in the first place."

The cave looms out of the ground like some monstrous serpent. The carvings look fairly life like even now, years after they were carved. You can only imagine what it would have looked like when it was still being tended to by the people that created it in the first place. The bugs return almost as soon as you leave the cave, annoying you and your companions. The sun is the better part of the way through the sky, and some darker clouds are looming in the distance. Your party should just reach the city before both the rain and the darkness fall.

As soon as the bug return, Venos takes a moment to quickly smear himself and Fang with some of the swamp mud. "There, isn't that better?"
He points out the dark clouds to the others, "looks like we'll get a shower around the time we reach Clifton. That should help clean us up from our journey."
As they travel, he shares a few stories with the group. Some true. Some less so. Nothing too incriminating. Also asking if they have any stories. Trying to make the trek back seem shorter.
