Venos peeks inside the barrel. Checking to see if it's the same content he had left earlier. Some rations and a few torches. "We can send my barrel up the chute, and then try the ritual. I'm not eager to descend into the dark water, but I want to atleast try checking down there. I have some rope up with my dog. Probably best to tie off before the dive. If I get in trouble, I can give some tugs to signal."

"Are you really sure you want to try the ritual. i really dont think i can do it. its way more advanced than what im currently studying" bert says as he looks extremely nervous about trying to cast this ritual.

Sighs lightly and nods, "okay. I've just thought of an alternative plan. We tie the barrel to me, and put me in the harness. Then I use a rock to help me sink down into the downward tunnel. If I descend with the barrel upside down, it will allow me to bring some air in case I need it. Additionally, when I'm ready to swim back up, I drop the rock and the air in the barrel-boat should help me rise."
Venos puts his hands out, and tilts his head as he gives Pemberton a chance to regale his brilliant plan. Assuming there is no objection, he starts putting the plan in motion.

"even though its a bit odd i think it will have better success than me attempting to cast this spell." he says still nervous about it as he helps him tie off the barrel.

Down here is pretty rock free, though you do know of at least one rock above. With the rock you tied off to before your plan should work to lower you down with enough air to breath for a little while. The only problem you can foresee now is seeing things while your head is inside an upside down barrel.

"No useable rocks down here. We'll have to have your novices lower a rock down carefully. I only foresee having a problem seeing when I have to pop my head into the barrel to take an extra breath."
Once all they are missing is the rock, Venos starts swimming out. The empty barrel slowly pulled behind him by the rope. In the main chamber, the Hin starts focusing on a slow, steady breath.

he follows him back out. glancing towards the room with the ritual set up in it, before turning and heading for that room. knowing that there is a big chance at failing or something going horribly wrong but now he is wondering if its the better option than having a barrel on venos head. walking into the room he goes over to where everything and after making sure everything is still set up properly he takes a seat and begins the ritual
(not sure what i need to roll for it)

If the spell is on your class’s spell list but of a higher level than you can normally cast, you must make an ability check using your Spellcasting ability to determine whether you cast it successfully. The DC equals ten plus the spell’s level. On a failed check, the spell is not cast. Failure by five or more can lead to a backlash.

(ok gonna give it shot) (d20+wisdom) (15+2=17) He calls venos back into the room as he starts to cast the ritual. working meticulously to make sure he doesnt mess it up as he really wants this to work for his new friend.

House rule: Even if the spell isn’t on your list, you can still attempt to cast it as a ritual if you have the ritual casting class feature. The DC is higher in this case.

"Are you feeling sure about this, Bert?" He follows the man reluctantly. Taking his place for the ritual. Waiting patiently as he attempts to weave the magic. Raising an eyebrow as the liquid evaporates.
A sigh when he assumes the magic has failed. Feeling a little relieved. Smiling to comfort the caster, "better to break even than a heavy loss. I'll just swim down with the barrel of backup air." Venos sets out to swim. He waits a few moment to give his current traveling companion time. Taking a deep breath and beginning his swim underwater.

(The DC was 10+ (spell level*2) or 16 in this case. Success!)
You carefully follow the proscribed ritual, tracing the required patterns and reading the rites as required. When the components burst into liquid and vanish in a puff of steam you almost falter, but manage to finish the last few lines. The steam drifts to both your faces and you both inhale the magic infused steam. Venos, you have no idea if it worked or not, but nothing exploded so you assume everything went well. Bert, you feel like it went smoothly, but can’t be sure until you actually try to breath under water.

The spell had been cast and was successful. Feel free to have fun with the descriptions as to how you figure that out. Your diving bell idea will work for the most part, but will be a little annoying to get the weight right as well as balancing the barrel with one hand to keep the air inside. Torches also can’t be brought under water so it will be dark down there, unless you have another idea?

Venos calls up the chute to the novices. "There should be a large rock up there. I need you to tie a rope around it, and lower it slow down here."
As the rock is lowered down, he looks over to Bert. "As I use the rock to sink, can you hold the barrel upside down? Since we tied one end of a rope around the barrel & the other end to me, as I descend the barrel will be pulled down. If it's upside down, it should trap some air to act as a pocket of air in case."
Once the final preparations are set, Venos takes a deep breath and lets the weight of the stone drag him down. Letting himself be pulled underwater was a strange feeling. It was like being pulled from one world into another. The world above water into a world below. Survival instinct urged the rogue to release the rock and let buoyancy lift him back to the surface. He shook his head, steeled himself to the job, and looked down as he slowly descended through this main chamber and toward the tunnel that lead deeper into parts unknown.

bert nods and holds the barrel up letting it slowly sink into the water to trap as much air as possible. Once veno's is where he can no longer be seen bert looks around nervously as if expecting another walking body to show up again.

The rock drags you down much faster than you expected. The cold water only gets cooler as you descend. The pressure increases too, first ten feet, then twenty. At thirty your feet hit the ground and you drop the rock, quickly pulling your feet up to avoid crushing your toes. Four sources of soft blue light gently pulse in time with one another. The light briefly illuminates the area, if only for a second at a time. This chamber is similar to the ones above, only vertical instead of horizontal. Like one of the spokes above was just copied and turned on it’s side.
The light comes from four perfectly round half spherical divots. Other than that you only find a circular indentation about ten feet around set in the floor of the room. A tight seam runs across the circle. Maybe a door or hatch? That’s about when something catches your attention. Movement from above. You look up and see the final corpse you’ve been sent to look for swimming down toward you, it’s lifeless eyes staring without seeing.
Roll init.

The speed of the descend is a little surprising, but he's just thankful it isn't a deeper. A few bubbles escape his nose as continues to hold most of his breath. A curl crests his lips as he spots the 4 pulsing lights circling what could be a... latch?
The movement pulling his attention, Venos' gaze bolts up. His hand instinctively moves to the hilt of his rapier. Pulling the blade free of its sheath, and getting ready to stab the corpse as soon as it was close enough.

(When making a melee weapon attack, a creature that doesn't have a swimming speed (either natural or granted by magic) has disadvantage on the attack roll unless the weapon is a dagger, javelin, shortsword, spear, or trident.
A ranged weapon attack automatically misses a target beyond the weapon's normal range. Even against a target within normal range, the attack roll has disadvantage unless the weapon is a crossbow, a net, or a weapon that is thrown like a javelin (including a spear, trident, or dart).
Creatures and objects that are fully immersed in water have resistance to fire damage.)

Feeling the resistance of the water against the thin steel of the weapon, Venos reconsiders his plan. Resheathing his rapier and drawing his dagger. The small but sturdy blade moving so much smoother. Pushing the ropes tethered to him aside with his free hand, the Hin readies himself to attack. If Lady Luck smiles on him, this will require the minimal amount of damage to her body... and more importantly his own.

As the zombie swims close enough to strike you, it also comes within your ability to strike it. You stab the corpse in the neck, trying to sever the spine quickly so you don't damage the body too badly. Bert looks down into the water, staring intently at the torch light reflections on the water's surface as he swims in place. Bert doesn't so much see anything below, as the situation down there is too far to be seen directly, but the rope that's connected to the barrel jerks sideways abruptly, and a collection of bubbles flutter to the surface to alert you that something might be going on down there. The corpse lunges and swings, but the water makes it's attacks slow and easy to dodge.

As the corpse brings her arm around for the attack, he's able to drop his head under the swing. He had been apprehensive about the idea of fighting underwater. Though it seemed to be at his advantage in this case, he wouldn't plan to make a habit of it.
His lips curl at the corners and couple more bubbles escape, but Venos doesn't mind. It was only the beginning of the fight, however things were going well so far. He stabs again as his adrenaline rises.

Bert swims down about fifteen feet before the brief glow illuminates a moment in the struggle. As the glow fades you’re once again unable to see. Like a slow strobe light, one second on, one second off. It’s confusing to see glimpses of movement, then nothing. You can get down to the combat by using your action to dash, or use your action for something else from where you’re swimming.
