History
Steve Rogers had the perfect life. Loving parents, and a little sisters that didn't drive him hay wire, well, she didn't drive him hay wire while she was alive... more on that later.
My Mother was the strict one, prone to loosing her temper and knocking sense into the prisoners that were foolish enough to step out of line. Although sometimes violent, she was well respected by staff and prisoners alike as a fair overlord and boss. My father was somewhat softer, tending to the wounded and the sick at the farm. It was because of him that other slave farms thought the Rogers farm was a cushy deal for the slaves on it. (Maybe they never met my Mother when she was angry?) My father insisted that we spend a little more on food, and comfort for the prisoners. However, he could also be strict, and any prisoner that stepped out of line or broke the farms rules would loose those comforts for a time. Repeat rule-breakers lost those comforts for the remainder of there stay.
Growing up in Vaeles was simple for Steve, his parents owned and operated a large farm. Unlike the neighboring farms, the majority of the workers on the Rogers farm were slaves. These slaves were criminals working off there debt to society.
Discipline was tight around the farm, between the slaves guards and Steve's parents it was tough to get away with anything. Although he managed to sneak off into the city at least once a month, he was always rounded up again before he could really get into too much trouble.
After his third 'visit' to town, his parents hired a chaperon to watch over Steve. This became a game of cat and mouse between Steve and his chaperon. A game of Steve trying to visit town, and his chaperon trying to stop him. Unfortunately for Steve, this was a game which the chaperon always won.
My chaperon can be summed up in one word: competent. The man seemed like one of those Gnomish machines, it was as if he never slept. No matter what time I tried anything he was there, and the first couple times I tried to run or fight he promptly thumped me and dragged me back to bed.
Steve's little sister Kelsey was more disposed to following the rules of the household, and as such, she was given far more leeway. Kelsey was allowed to go into the city proper whenever there was a supply run for the farm.
As Steve got older, he eventually outgrew having a chaperon, and his parents allowed him to train as a Slave Keeper so he could work at the family business. His chaperon became his slave keeper trainer, and over time Steve gained the knowledge necessary to pass his keeper test.
The man who was once my chaperon could again only be described as competent at his new role of teacher. In combat practice, if I let my guard down for a moment he whacked me one. If I complained about being tired, he would work me until I passed out from exhaustion. (It took me two lessons to learn not to ever complain again.) The most annoying part about this training is that he would only speak Elven to me during the lessons, and I was required to only speak Eleven to him whenever I could. Once he taught me a new word, I was expected to know it from then on. He would either whack me or ignore me if I used the common equivalent of an Elven word I should have known.
One year ago, two weeks after Steve's eighteenth birthday the two worst things imaginable happened to Steve's family. First, there was a massive escape from the Rogers farm. Although most of the criminals were rounded up by the keepers, those that escaped had enough sentence fees remaining to put Steve's family into slavery themselves.
Thirty slaves escaped that day, and all but thirteen were rounded up. Some basic information about the slaves is as follows:
-Granth, a Half-Orc with a temper was captured after lost a game of cards, and then knocked half the bar senseless in a blind rage.
-Balefire, a Human caster with pyromaniac tendencies was captured as he fled the scene of a burning inn. When Bannor, a Troll guard asked him if he would play claw claw bite, he assumed the guard was onto him, and set the Troll on fire. When he woke up two weeks later he was on the Rogers farm.
-Fade, a Human was captured after some fellows he broke into a gem shop with were caught spending their loot. They sold him out to the guard for reduced sentence's.
-Stiletto, a Human was captured after he broke into the Vaeles jail cells. In the morning the three thieves that squealed on Fade were found with single puncture wounds to the chest. Nobody could prove that Stiletto was behind the murders. He claimed to only be there to break Fade out.
-Moonlighter, a Human was captured while working a crowd that was watching a juggler in the street. He had over twenty gold on him at his arrest, maybe he shouldn't have cut that last purse string.
-Solarian, a Human was captured after he dusted a crop of undead working a farm outside the city. He admitted that he was responsible for six other attacks against the cities undead workforce. Lucky for Solarian, undead are counted as possessions and not people, or he would have faced a death sentence.
-Harry, Burly, and Crow, all Human were captured when they attempted to demand protection money from the adventurers guild. Nobody said they were intelligent.
-Widow, a Human, used illusion magic to take the form of the wives of rich nobles. She would use her natural sex appeal to get the men worked up and then demand presents if they wanted a repeat performance. After she milked the men for a while she would vanish. Their wives would resurface shortly after, all seemed to know without a doubt that their husbands had strayed. She was captured by dumb luck, when someone tripped and fell down a long flight of stairs. They grabbed her and dragged her down with them. When she woke up her spell duration had expired, and an angry husband wanted some answers. Cheating husbands across the city claimed that their mistresses had in fact looked just like their wives...
-Hoch, a Human was captured while attempting to rob one of the Guild-masters of the Mages Guild, He saw the fancy clothing, but he must have missed the glowing runes on the trim.
-Xorex, a Human, was captured when one of his fake documents was noticed by one of the guards.
-Srevel, a Human, was captured attempting to enter a restricted area using Xorex's fake documents.
As if that wasn't bad enough, both Steve and Kelsey were in town on a supply run during the escape. Steve was at the forge picking up his Masterwork Guisarme, while Kelsey was stopping by the Mages guild to check the progress on some new slave collars the family had ordered.
Unbeknown to the siblings, while they were around town other things were happening. Namely, delegates from Port Cigamenta were attending some peace talks at the militia grounds. While the delegates were at the talks, their laborer's were roaming the streets looking for trouble.
The laborers found the trouble they were seeking in the form of Kelsey. They watched her leaving the Mages guild and assumed that she was an arcanist of some sort. They followed her, and dragged her into an alley. Bound and gagged so she couldn't 'cast spells' in her own defense they proceeded to beat and rape her to death.
Someone overheard the assault, and contacted the watch. However, it was too late for Kelsey. Later after the short trial, the men responsible were beheaded while those that loved Kelsey watched. Although Steve watched there deaths, he was mostly dead inside, blaming himself for not being there to protect his little sister.
After the trial, with no home to return to since it was repossessed by the city to pay some of the family debt. Steve took on a new persona, he began calling himself Haiwire and vowed vengeance against Port Cigamenta for breeding the kind of hate that would allow men to do something so heinous to his little sister.
Notes on Game Mechanics:
(This one's for you Carl, remember an idea can be a dangerous thing...)
Haiwire will not double-team an opponent. Since his sister was beaten to death by a group of men, he sees outnumbering an opponent as being just as dishonorable as the Cigamentions that killed his sister.
What this means in game terms is that Haiwire will not grant flanking to his allies. No +2 bonus, no sneak attack for Wismer. It will also mean that Haiwire will switch to full defensive if the party joins a one on one fight that he is currently fighting.
Shrapnel Sunder
You can turn a sundered object into a deadly strike.
Prerequisites: Str 13, Power Attack, Improved Sunder.
Benefit: If you successfully sunder an object carried by an opponent (such as a weapon or shield), you may deflect the shrapnel to hit an opponent adjacent to you. The opponent you choose must make a reflex save DC (10 + 1/2 character’s level + dex bonus) or suffer 1d6 points of slashing damage. You may make one shrapnel sunder per attack of opportunity
Arrow Slash
You can sunder a projectile in the air.
Prerequisites: Str 13, Power Attack, Improved Sunder
Benefit: You may use a slashing weapon to attempt to sunder a projectile that would hit you. You gain a +4 on the attack roll and deal double damage to the projectile if you hit. If you do not sunder the projectile you take damage as normal. You do not provoke an attack of opportunity when attempting to sunder the projectile. You may only attempt to sunder one projectile per attack of opportunity.
