The charred timbers still form a husk of what was once your bedroom, although the contents were either looted or destroyed. Sifting through the ruins, you find no sign of your mother. Whether that means she is alive or dead, you can't be sure. Although the wood still has a few points that tendrils of smoke curl out from, you can tell that the fire is at least a few days old. The smoke from the fires at Urutah itself is what lead you to run through the night to get home by morning. Although it is a cloudless beautiful day, with a warm breeze, the beauty is lost on you. One though does creep up into your mind, the giant saying, "You might just be hardy enough to survive the Traal mountains Satifi."
What's your plan?

Satifi stroked his chin, and looked over the rubble with disappointment. How does one prepare to find such a scene, and what step would be next? With grim stoicism he considered his options, pursing his lips against the rising possibility of an emotional outburst.
Mustering every reserve of cognition, he immediately went forward with his life, caring neither to dwell on nor remember the image of his burnt home. His memory of the giant which had earlier crept into his mind returned, and he climbed back atop his trusty mule. He had never even removed his riding boots, but sought out the best path he knew.
As he cantered the cantankerous crossbreed carefully through the nearby paths, he made sure to keep the trot at a low volume, and his ears and eyes alert for signs of life. Were he to discover the villagers fleeing from the destruction, or whoever or whatever caused the destruction, he wanted to be sure he would see it first. The mule, Nelliyung, had been his companion for years and was still packed for travel. As he went, he planned to scrape from the land enough to eat, that his packed goods would last longest...
(Use as appropriate, I consider them all generally self-explanatory combined with the above text: Knowledge Nature- 9+5= 14 Knowledge Geography- 13+4= 17 Survival- 1+7= 8 (nat. 1) Ride- 4+2=6 Stealth- 19+5=24 Awareness- 7+5=13)
(Can we do third person past (he couldn't), instead of second/first present(you can't/I can't)? I know, I know, what a scoundrel making demands already! Character sheet is updated, by the way)

(You know you never did set out a direction, although I'm going to assume that your headed North toward the Traal Mountains. One of these days I really must upload the map I drew of the valley.)
Having grown up exploring the valley, your knowledge of the local geography is far more than sufficient to get you heading in the correct direction. Just a simple matter of finding the Heaven's Spire Mountain in the North-East, pivot a little to the left and head straight North.
You journey for a couple of days, stopping to fill your waterskin at the distributaries of the Urutah river, which splits the valley down the center from North to South. Gathering berries from bushes, and getting lucky and shooting down a valley pheasant on the second morning provides quite a bit of food. Which is a good thing, because you spend almost all of the third day being violently sick. Looking at the mess left after reminds you just how close the poisonous bittersweet berries look to regular cherries.
In about a day you will arrive at the base of the Traal Mountains, the range that covers the entire northern side of the Urutah Valley. You aim to be about a day from the massive waterfall where the Urutah valley gets all its water from.

Satifi continued traveling, hoping to find some refugees or clues about the events of the last few days. He decided his first priority would be the establishment of some sort of reclusive residence or hidden hovel, a base of operations from which to continue safely. He continued on, seeking some shelter amid the foothills and rocky base of the Traal mountains, but knowing not what he was to find.

On the journey North you find no signs of refugees, and nearly nothing about what's been happening within the valley while you were off hunting. The only clue you have is the number of booted footprints in the dusty road. A large band of men, most likely soldiers based on the pattern of their steps, marched West toward Urutah some days past.
Having not traveled this far North before, you find it tough to figure out the best location to make your base of operations. Your knowledge of the layout of the valley is great for general area information, but specifics like the location of a reclusive residence or hidden hovel simply don't come to mind. Which you suppose makes sense or they wouldn't be that reclusive or hidden.
Just as you're about to give up for the day, and find another temporary shelter for the evening you spot a dark patch in the base of the Traal Mountains. Creeping closer you can see that the dark patch is in fact a cave mouth.

Exhausted, but keeping his wits about him, Satifi warily enters the cave.
He climbs down from Nelliyung, and reaches into his saddlebags to prepare for anything. He takes from the bags a torch and spear, hefting the weapon in his right hand and holding the burning torch in his left. He checks the cave entrance and floor for signs of life.

(Word of note, a spear is two handed. You can hold a spear in one hand, but not wield it for damage. Although I suppose you could wield it in one hand with a -4 penalty, dealing only half strength in damage.)
You take your first tentative steps into the cave, and hunker down to wait for your eyes to adjust. While waiting you can smell an animalistic musk, and you can hear a husky breathing coming from deeper within the cave. The breathing, huffs and snorts, like when someone or something is waking, but not quite awake. Now you realize that you haven't been walking carefully to avoid making noise.
