You stab the thing again, this time slashing your blade across it’s throat. Another killing blow, but once again it just keeps attacking. The fleshless hand rakes gouges across your cheek as it smacks you across the face. For a moment you think it must have been something you said, like you were in a tavern or something. Then the pain hits and snaps you back to reality.

You stab into the creature again, a part of you knowing that this random torso shot won't do anything. Especially since the earlier vital hits didn't seem to have any effect. To your surprise, the creature collapses in a heap. You take a step back, blade ready to strike again. The creature remains there, unmoving and still.

Cautiously, he crouches down pulling the identifying ring off her finger. "Sorry, ma'am. May Pelor's light find you, and with Tymora's grace I'll find your friends more lively."
An uneasy thought rises in Venos' mind. Her group hadn't been missing long, and in that time she had died and risen as an undead.
Setting his eyes once again on the footlocker, the rogue makes his way over. Checking for traps, then checking the lock.

The chest is fairly large, roughly three feet long by two feet deep and stands about a foot and a half tall. You examine the hinges, and look for hidden mechanisms, but it looks safe enough to open. Checking the lock, you find that it’s not actually a lock, just a latch. With a flick of your finger it opens and you lift the lid to look inside.
You find a vial with bright blue liquid inside. The liquid bubbles as if carbonated. The vial is sitting atop three outfits, all stylish in fashions you’ve seen around Clifton. One outfit is black, one brown and one gray. There is a pouch tucked into one corner that contains thirty gold phoenixes, and another that contains two rations.

Venos smiles wide. "Sweet." His little Hin hands quickly snatching up the vial. Unsure what it is, he slides in his pocket. Sniffing at the rations to make sure before starting to eat one of the rations. As he chews on a bite, hes adding the thirty gold to his coin pouch.

The vial is cold to the touch, and when you pick it up the bubbles keep swirling around inside the vial. You slip it into your pocket and move onto your next prize. The rations smell fine. One is a hunk of dried meat. Beef you think. The other is a hunk of hardtack, or sailor’s bread. This stuff is tough, and usually requires soaking before it can be eaten. The weight of the pouch feels good in your hand, and even better as the weight drops into your own pouch.

Using his dagger, Venos makes a small cut near the neck of each of the outfits. With enough luck he wouldn't run into a necromancer down here, especially after the fight with the dead adventurer. However, this should spotting him back in Clifton easier. Then closes the footlocker once more.
He climbs back into the barrel-boat, and starts paddling. Planning to go back to the main room and then on to the next tunnel (clockwise).

You climb back into your barrel and push off the bottom to get yourself moving. The paddling is slow, but you make steady progress down the thirty foot hallway back to the main chamber. Following the left wall you find a similar thirty foot long tunnel that bottoms out just like the last one. The chamber that opens out at the end of the hall is similar to the previous room too, at least in size. Another roughly round, twenty foot diameter chamber. This one doesn't have a bed, but instead is filled with stacks of boxes and crates.

After paddling over to the dry landing, Venos ties off the barrel-boat. His curiousity, and maybe a little greed, getting the better of him. Tapping on the side of a few crates with the side of his crowbar to check for any movement from inside. If it seems clear, he opens a couple of the crates.

You spend a good hour poking through each of the boxes and crates. They’re all full of trade goods. Rations, bolts of cloth, small tools and such. Lots of little things that are not worth a lot individually, but combined the lot would be worth a hefty sum. It feels like this hodge podge of goods might have been stolen from various places, and combined here.

Lighting a new torch off the remains of the dying one. Venos throws a few rations and torches into barrel, and a tinderbox into his backpack. Then taking a bolt of cloth, he runs it from the pile of stuff to the water's edge. After getting into the barrel-boat, he lights the cloth on fire and starts to row out of the room. Heading for the next tunnel.

The cloth burns slowly across the floor as you paddle your makeshift boat away. The smoke from your fire pooling near the ceiling of the room, with a little of it trailing along the ceiling of the hallway back toward the main chamber. Ignoring the smoke, you reach the main chamber and follow the wall around to the left again. Not surprisingly, you see a hallway similar to the previous two leading off into darkness.
Much like as before, you progress down the hallway. Also like before, it goes on for about thirty feet. As it does so the bottom of the tunnel flattens out and steadily rises out of the water. By the end of the tunnel your barrel boat his bumped the bottom. You're starting to get the idea that all the offshoot rooms are laid out the same, as you're now looking into a round chamber about twenty feet in diameter. This one has a shelf filled with a jumble of burnt spell components against the far side of the chamber, and the center of the room is a ritual spell casting circle that appears to have been used over and over again. Surrounding the circle, but outside of where they would be used for the ritual, are small piles of burnt cut reeds. There is a charred outline of a person near the ritual circle.
The walls here are covered in similar artwork to the chamber above, but with a more orderly appearance. If you wish to study the walls it will take you an hour to try and figure it all out. There are two more charred outlines against the wall near where you now stand.

He pays little attention to the cave artwork. He did focus more on the three charred outlines. Are these the remaining Humans he was sent to find? The woman in the other room did look burnt.
He checked around the base of the scorch marks for any items that might survived. After which, he gets back in the barrel-boat, and heads for the last tunnel.

Carefully moving around the room, you check out the scorch marks. It seems like some sort of explosion emanated from the ritual circle in the center of the room. The closest scorch mark is just outside the circle, and based on the outline seems like the person was kneeling. The other two were standing against the wall near the entrance behind the kneeling person. There are no objects near the outlines, though there are components on the shelf.
The last hallway and room are exactly the same layout as the first three you explored. The final room is almost completely empty, though there is evidence that the room used to contain crates and boxes. Now the room only contains three corpses. One female body has been bisected, and it’s head has been smashed in. This body seems far more decomposed than the other two. The other two are charred like the one you fought before. The bigger charred body is female, and vaguely resembles one of the women you were sent to collect. The body is wearing a similar ring. The smaller body is male, and isn’t wearing a similar ring. This must be the mage that the adventurers hired.

He bends down and collects the identifying rings from two of the three bodies. Looking over the bodies, and wonders where is the other Human? Had she turned on her party members? Probably best to return to the guild, and tell them what I've found.

The rings come off easily enough. It seems that the bodies have been searched before, but the rings were not taken. You gather what you came for and get back into your barrel boat. You paddle your way back to the middle of this place, and see the four paths leading off in their respective directions. Your rope still hangs where you left it, and your torch illuminates the only path you haven't explored that leads downward.

Venos paddles himself over to the rope leading up. Reaching out to grab the rope, he grimaces as his body reminds him the state battling with an undead had left him. He secures the rope around the barrel so he can pull it up after he's climbed up. He didn't know if the job was done. Whether they'd want him to find the remain party member, or write her off. He just hoped her deity was looking after her. She might need the help.
He starts his ascent.

The climb up was horrible when you were not sore from a through beating. This time the climb up is agony. Your muscles scream in protest. By the time you throw your body over the edge of the chute, you lay there panting for breath. The edges of what you see blacken and spots dance across your vision. For a good while you think you might pass out from the pain, but as you lay there your vision returns and your breathing regulates. The pain retreats as well, but the lingering soreness throbs in waves.

Staring at the ceiling as the pain begins to lessen, and his full vision returns, "what I'd give for a meat puppet. A big, dumb Ox to do the heavy lifting. Who's happy with half a share of the profit, and a full share of the hitting stuff."
He makes slow work of lifting up the barrel. Pulling for a bit, looping the rope around the rock to take a break, and then repeating. Once the barrel is up, he untied the rope used in the chute. Rolling the 100 ft of rope, and putting it into the barrel. If his muscles were up for rolling the barrel back to town he heads out, or takes another rest.

It’s been a very physical day. Lots of walking from town to dungeon, dungeon to Sinkhole, Sinkhole to dungeon. Climbing, and battles. You’re not sure you would make it back to town if you had to roll the barrel along with you. Let alone make it back before dark. Given how beat up you are, you’re not sure you want to be out after dark. Who knows what lurks here once the sun goes down.

Feeling the weight of the day, Venos walks over to about 10 feet right of the exit tunnel. Setting down his backpack and unrolling his bedroll. Removing his armour, but storing a dagger under the edge of his bedroll. One under each side, just in case. Eating the remains of a ration, and drinking some water. Then curling up for some needed rest.

You sleep well, even if you were woken up by a couple of too curious rats investigating you or your belongings. They scatter readily enough. When you wake it is pitch black down here. Your body is well rested, but quite stiff from all the extra activity in the last few days. What’s the plan now Sir?

Using some of his athletic and acrobatic training, he utilizes some stretches to help loosen some of his stiffness. He moves the barrel to a side of the round room. Hoping whoever comes into the room won't notice it. Leaving only some rations and torches inside.
Gathering up his bedroll, (dons his) armour, daggers, and backpack, the Hin starts his long trek back to town.

You light a torch so you can see what you’re doing. Now that you can see you stretch out your sore muscles, and begin to feel a bit looser. There’s a little left over ache, but it’s easily manageable. You gather your belongings and head up the angled path up toward the surface. As you approach the now closed off entrance, the huge snake mouth begins to open on it’s own. As it rises you see a ball of fur unfurl into the largest rat you’ve ever seen. It puffs up it’s fur, and emits a growly hiss in your direction.

As the creature leaps at you, you tuck and roll toward where the creature was. You find yourself standing where it was while it lands where you were. It crouches down, readying itself for another attack. It seems hesitant since you did not show it any hostility. You might just be able to disengage from this situation without it devolving into more combat.

Assuming the disengage is successful, he begins the trek back to Clifton.
