Since I'm unaware of the more immediate threat facing Wismer, I will knock at the door with the crying woman, calling out, "Hello in there, my name is Haiwire, and my companions and I have come to aid your village. I hear that you're crying, can I be of some assistance?" If she chooses to reply, I will focus less on her words and more on her tone. Trying to see if she might be being held prisoner in her own home by one of the attackers.

Not wanting to completely give up my position yet, I will scoot around the barrel in a manner that this guard does not catch up to me before I have had my chance to give the business end of my rapier to.
Right after daisy pusher number one has gotten the point, I am going to shout "Hey Haywire there is a pathetic Cigomentian cow pie over here, whom would like to discuss business with you. Could you come over here and negotiate with him please? Thanks."
Now that I am done mocking daisy pusher number two, I am going to attempt to use whatever is nearest daisy pusher number one as some cover.

While Knox is fighting with the "brute", I try to reassure the girl, telling her that we are folk that do not tolerate violence to innocent people, and that we believe she is the innocent one here. I explain that I only meant that bullies will surely get what's coming to them.
"By the way, I'm pretty sure that ferrets and lemmings are cousins or something. Lemmings are these little furry animals that all rush toward a cliff to commit suicide, and although there are no cliffs here, I'm pretty sure that swinging at you a second ago was his friendly way of letting us know that he has a death wish. So I guess he's really more like a lemming than a ferret, although, my friend will likely leave him laying on the ground as opposed to flipping in the air. That's one difference between lemmings and magic ferrets: lemmings don't flip in the air so well. They put the "lay" in "pLAY dead."
While he's talking, Tangent loads another bolt into his cross bow and gets ready to shoot the big bully if Knox gets knocked prone.

Knox takes a sharp breathe to replace the air knock out of him, and fuel his muscles. Bringing his sword up and across the man's chest. 'And punishment is what you'll see', is the thought as the leather armour of his opponent opens and further blood-marked. _________________________________ Attack: (18+6=)24; Damage (4+2=)6 Hovis : The brute's lips curl, a low growl escaping him as he lunges forward, one arm cocked way back. You can feel the air pushed aside with the force of the blow as you step sideways, the fist barely missing your cheek, and you realize just in time that his other fist is coming up quickly in a jab toward your ribs, which you manage to deflect with your shield. The man doesn't appear to so much as blink at the crash of knuckles against hard wood, though, apparently used to rough treatment. Tangent : Watching the fight between Hovis and the Cigomentan soldier, you can get some measure of things; unless he's hiding some unusual skill, the brute appears to have little interest in doing more than brawling with Hovis, throwing as many punches as he can manage. It seems unlikely that he's the type to do more than that, unless he decides to take things to a grapple. While you load your crossbow and explain the differences between ferrets and lemmings to the girl, you can see her continued shock and disbelief in her eyes, entirely confused as to why you would bring up something like that so calmly while your friend is fighting. If your goal is to keep her distracted, however, it does work perfectly for that, as you can tell that her entire concentration is focused on you rather than the brawl happening nearby. Haiwire : When you call out, you can hear the sound of the crying hiccough to a stop, as if the sound got caught in her throat. After a moment, you hear her call out, "J.. Just go! We've suffered enough, why can't you just leave us alone!", her voice thick with emotion. You can hear anger at the situation her village is in, and a great deal of pain, and below those two, you could swear you hear the hint of fear. You are also able to hear the sound of Wismer shouting for you, somewhere up ahead. Wismer : Your taunts do seem to have some affect on the soldiers, although calling for help does seem to have alerted all three to your location, instead of just the one that was stalking you. The one that had come nearer to the barrel (#1, with how you numbered them off) takes a couple attempts at getting to you around the barrel, which you manage to evade by shifting to keep the barrel between the two of you. Annoyed, the soldier grabs hold of the barrel, and with a great shout of effort manages to tip the barrel over, the rainwater inside sloshing messily across the ground. The soldier glares at you angrily, taking a step toward you and brandishing his sword, as his companions move behind him to back him up. An annoyed kick to the barrel sends it rolling back toward the center of the village, and out of their way. ((You're now inside the first guy's threatened range, Dan, and if you don't move quickly, you'll be flanked by his buddies. Dave could reach you with a full-out run this turn, unless he is busy investigating the house he's found.))

Taking note of Wismer's call, I hope that he can hold his own for the time being. "Good Lady, I understand that your village has been attacked. My party has only just arrived, and we seek to bring order back to this fair village. Can you come to the window so that I may see that you're unharmed? I will stand back from your home so that you can see that I mean you no harm."
Suiting words to action, I step back so that she could see me if she peeked out her window. If she does, I will signal to her to ask if anyone hostel is in there with her. If she shows signs that she's being held, a glancing eye or a mouthed word for example. I will then hold up my unlocked hand in a 'hang tight' sign.

((I'm going to assume that since Tangent has been staying out of the combat thus far, he'll be remaining so? AC is still 15, if you're going to be taking a parting shot, Heather. Same goes if Knox is chasing him down, Carl.))
Crossing the previous cut across the brute's chest, this one is notably deeper, and forces him to stagger back a couple of steps, holding the wound with one hand. His chest rises and falls deeply, like an angered bull ready to charge, and blood seeps slowly between his fingers. With a snarl of frustration, he takes another careful step back, before turning and fleeing, apparently more willing to part with his pride than his life.
Back at the crying woman's house, the sound of Haiwire's voice carries through the deserted streets, heard both by the woman inside, and (faintly) by Wismer. There's a pause, after which Haiwire can see a bit of movement inside the house, followed by the woman appearing cautiously at the window, trying to hide the candlestick she's apparently grabbed to defend herself with. She stares at you for a long time, apparently trying to size you up and decide if you're with the attackers or not, before asking defensively, "How do I know if you're telling the truth or not? You look the same as all the other soldiers that came and attacked us.."

"You've already trusted me enough. I just wanted to make sure you are alright in there, not being held by one of the soldiers that attacked. I'm going to guess that if you were being held captive, that they wouldn't allow you to arm yourself with a candlestick. Now that I know you're safe, I will be on my way." I will also briefly explain what I have the other townsfolk doing to combat the chaos, and where to find them if she wanted to take part. Lastly before I go I will describe my party, so she knows who she can turn to if she finds herself in danger once again.
Now that I think the woman is safe I will jog over to where Wismer is located and attempt to take stock of the situation there. Spot: 8 + stuff (off to work!)

With the swing of your sword, Knox, you fail to catch your fleeing opponent in any of his meaty bits, but you do feel it catch on something, and when it pulls free, a small rain of shiny objects sails from the freshly torn bottom of a belt pouch - several coins fall to the ground, along with a set of three rings; When examined (either now or later), the rings look to be a pair of wedding bands and an engagement ring. The coin totals up to roughly 50 gold. In the process of chasing after the brute, you realize that you won't be able to keep up to him on foot, given your heavier armor. It's doubtful he'll be causing more problems any time soon, but if you want to bring him down regardless, you'll need to do more than charge at him. Tangent, if you want to take a parting shot, you'll have until your next post to do so before he turns a corner and vanishes from line of sight.
Haiwire, your words seem to calm the woman somewhat, or at least assure her that you aren't going to be breaking through her window and bringing your guisarme to bear. She listens as you describe what the rest of the town is doing, frequently glancing back into her house as if worried about something. When you're finished, she pleads, "If you see Elias - I mean, the town's doctor - please, send him here, won't you? My.. my husband.." As she speaks, you can catch a glimpse of a blot of people that look not unlike a mob, only able to be made out from here as an outline of several human shapes. If you move toward Wismer, you can make out the situation more clearly; The rain barrel Wismer had been hiding behind rolling away, with three armed men advancing on your sneaky companion.

I pause in my heading off, and turn back, "I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but Elias is unconscious. Is your husband stable at the moment? I can tend to his wounds, but my companion requires immediate assistance with combat. If your husband will live until I can assist my companion that would be better for him."

"What? But he.. oh no.. I can't believe these brutes, coming out of nowhere, and just taking what they want... I think I've stopped my husband's bleeding for now, but he does need to be checked out soon. I'm no doctor, after all, and this isn't exactly a scraped knee.. Send someone soon, please, I'll do what I can to make him comfortable." Worry still clear in her eyes, the woman disappears from her window, presumably to further tend to her husband's wounds.

Speaking quickly, so as not to delay my assistance to Wismer, I say, "I will return personally just as soon as I can. I have some ability with tending to wounds." Before heading off at a quick jog.
As I get closer and see the clearly unbalanced fight, I grip the hilt of my weapon tightly, raising it high above my head, and charge into the fray.

((Dave - I mentioned this a while back, but that was before my hiatus, and was directed to Dan - you're still a ways distant to him, outside of Charging range. You could be next to him with a full-out run, or if you moved/double moved this round, then you'd be in line for a charge next round. I've been playing a little loose with timing since I'm also waiting on Dan's action, now that his hiding place is gone and three guys with swords are advancing on him. Let's say roughly 80 feet of movement to get there, so just at the range of four move actions when wearing chainmail.
Heather - I've been looking through the character sheets to refresh myself on what you guys are capable of, and where you all have been putting your efforts, so I could see what would make good challenges. I noticed, you have Precise Shot, but you were worried about firing into a melee before the brute ran. With Precise Shot, firing into a melee is not a concern for you, just for future reference. =P
So! Seems now we're waiting for Dan and Heather to post, so we can move forward with these situations. Dan's sent me a pile of attack and damage rolls, so if he doesn't post by the end of the weekend, I'm gonna have him stab at #1; If you have a particular target you're looking to make less moving, Dave, now would be a good time to mention it. #'s 2 and 3 will be open to charging, Dan himself is blocking your line of charge to #1, unless you move/double move before his turn to get within charge range and set up that line.))

(I would move so that I would have a charge at whomever, as my next couple actions would be moping up the second one. I would like to make one character choice known at this point however. Haiwire doesn't like unfair fights, and as such flanking with Haiwire does not grant the +2 bonus. Also, just in case I miss it in the future so you can remind me, Haiwire will not engage in melee to outnumber a foe.)

Tangent continues to talk confidently to the girl to distract her, since he is comfortable and not at all worried about Knox's fighting skill. Furthermore, he makes no more hostile actions towards the "brute", as he is loosing, and Tangent doesn't wish to alarm the girl with more violence so close to her. He hopes to distract her until she stops being afraid, and realizes that she's in the hands of those that won't allow harm to come to her.
"Now then lass, do you have any friends or family in this village that we can take you to or check on to make sure of their safety?"

((I'll try and remember that, Dave - could you edit your character-sheet-post to reflect that just in case? Also, MSN would be good at some point to work out how that will affect certain things.))
When the brutish man makes his escape (or is taken down by Knox, if he gets creative), the girl visibly deflates, as if finally realizing that she's actually, honestly, safe. When you mention family, however, you can see tears well back up in her eyes, but she sniffles and tries to keep them from flowing once more. "I.. my parents... he took me from them, he beat up my Dad pretty bad, but I think Mom was okay. I.. I could get there myself, but.. would you folk come with me? I don't want that man to come back, and.. and..", she begs, her voice failing her but her eyes pleading.

Isis tries to shake her head in protest at the lingering scent of smoke in the air as you throw yourself into the saddle, but the stern feel of your heels pressing into her flanks urges her forward, past the cart and your companions, toward where your quarry had rounded a corner in pursuit. As you ease past the corner, however, casting about to find him, you feel a grip grab hold of your armor, and attempt to pull you from the saddle. If you're dismounted, you find a very unpleasant looking man sneering down at you; If not, you find a very surprised brute of a man ineffectively pulling on your clothes. Either way, it's your turn.
((Trip attempt to pull you off your horse; Roll an opposed strength, 8 or lower and you're dismounted and prone, with 2 points of falling damage. Beat 8 and you're still mounted. That nat1 finally came up, on your spot.. unfortunate timing. But your 19 means that you're next in initiative, so at least he won't get a second attempt.))

With the grace of a ferocious feline I take a awe inspiring five foot step toward Daisy pusher number one. I want to do so in just such a way that in order for his buddies to flank me they must first lower there measly defenses to my superior combat prowess. While I am moving in such a beautiful manner my weapon mystically appears in my hand, then inside of daisy number one.
If either of daisy number two or three take my bait I want to mysteriously have my weapon appear inside of there gutless abdomen. Not knowing if how long it will take Haywire to get here or if he is able to come at this moment, I will continue to move combat back toward where I last saw the rest of my friends at. If I get a chance for some odd reason I will also take it to hide, then ambush one of them.

Given that you have three opponents advancing on you and no longer have cover, you would find it difficult to get into a position where you could hide, here; You'd have to find some nearby cover, most easily found if you could reposition the fight closer to the corner of a building, and then distract them somehow (via a bluff check as a standard action to distract, which would have to beat all three enemy's sense motives - tough, particularly since you're untrained in it). As they advance, your rapier does find purchase in #1, but you find yourself forced to pull the attack, angling your blade to deflect his own counterattack - it was aimed perfectly to slice cleanly across your neck, but you manage to deflect the attack and take it across a shoulder instead. #'s 2 and 3 advance, attempting to flank you, and #2 finds himself squeezed between the building and his companion, unable to defend against your flurry of attacks, catching the tip of your rapier and earning a deep furrow in his arm. Annoyed, he jabs quickly at you, but you catch his attack on your shield - giving #3 the chance to attack your flank, and taking a slash across your hip. As your attention shifts back toward #3 that moment too late, you see Haiwire charge up from behind, and with a great hacking movement, cleaves cleanly through #3, who crumples to the ground in two parts. ((Wismer has taken two hits, the first for 5 damage, the second for 7; #3 is down, #'s 1 and 2 are both damaged from your rapier. Let's see if I can make this table thing work.. There is a building wall to the left of the table next to you Wismer, but if you can get past #2, you can get around the corner. Legend : W= Wismer H = Haiwire [] = wall _ = not-wall At that scene, it's Wismer/Haiwire's turn.))

The surprised soldier, to his credit, reacts quickly against your attack - he raises his sword in an attempt to deflect your blade, and you just barely manage to land the blow in a way that has the potential to do damage. The ringing in your arms tells you that the hit was a solid one, but apparently not solid enough; your guisarme leaves a V-shaped furrow in the longsword's edge, but fails to finish the job. You have, however, managed to get the soldier's attention.

The boot to his face stuns the brute for a moment, until he shakes his head and spits - a string of blood follows the piece of tooth as it falls to the ground. Snarling, he grabs hold of your ankle, rearing back one meaty fist and driving it into your shin, causing pain to shoot up your leg - you take 7 points of subdual damage, and you're sure that you'll have a nasty bruise there soon enough. Apparently reconsidering fighting you while you have the advantage of being mounted, he edges himself toward the door of the house, watching your movements carefully enough to try and dodge while he feels with one hand for the edge of the door.

The tip of your rapier slides through the leather of your opponent's armor, and deeply into his stomach - you're reminded of how surprisingly soft the inside of the human body is, once you get past that hardened leather covering. When you withdraw your gore-covered blade, the soldier drops to the ground, leaving only #2 remaining. Rather than attempting to flee, he seems stricken by the loss of his friends, tears of rage escaping him as he flings himself at you, Wismer, and you just barely manage to dodge the tip of his sword.
((Guys, I'd love to know where you're recording your HP totals here; I know that three of you have taken damage so far, even if it's only subdual, but any time I want to see how things are going, I have to backtrack through the thread to find out exactly how much damage each of you has taken.

(If possible, I would like to interrupt the attack or redirect the attack to #2 instead, possibly with that shout at Wismer/DM discretion. Failing that, I would like to push #1 (taking the AoO) out of the way of Wismer's strike. Let me know what rolls you would like.)
