The town is as described above, nothing overly interesting as most of the outbuildings are designed to be purely functional. The one awesome thing is looking over the edge of the Sinkhole. That thing is a hundred feet across. The inside rim has been carved into stairs, you can see the torches hung around the stairs to give just enough light to see by, with the tiniest bit of overlap. The torches go on for about five hundred feet, but the pit continues on beyond the light. Even if you have a good head for heights, this hole would trigger a burst of adrenaline. Orellow, while you're looking off the side the miners finish tying the next empty wagon. You hop aboard and laugh at the shocked look on the miners faces. You give one of your two finger salutes, and they lower you down into the depths.
For the more sane among you, the stairs spiral around the inside rim of the sinkhole, with openings branching off frequently. Some of those openings are lit, while some are dark. One ends after about ten feet in a sturdy looking door. Oddly, the door is covered in bells and chimes. Several tunnels around the rim steadily pour water into the sinkhole, at these openings small wooden bridges have been placed to keep the miners from slipping on the wet algae covered stone. There are wooden platforms built out of the wall periodically, one of which the cart Orellow stands in lands upon.
However you chose to descend into the Sinkhole, you reach the platform where miners are untying the cart. A stocky Dwarf with a pockmarked face, and a thick braided beard bristles when he sees Orellow standing in the cart. He hurries over, the massive mining pick in his hand seems a part of him. He carries a sledge hammer in a back harness, and a half dozen nine inch nail are carried in a bandolier across his chest. "You daft boy? If that load had shifted, you would have taken the long plunge." His eyes flick to the blackness below, "There ain't no coming back from that boy." He pauses for a second, staring unblinking at Orellow, "Now, who are you lot, and what are you here for? Guard duty, clean out, or exploration?" His look now takes in the rest of you.

Orellow flips off the empty wagon and lands near the Dwarf (Acrobatics: 10+7=17). "I am Orellow Avnec! Seeker of Truths and Miner Guard of the Third Cart" he says and laughs. "I'm looking to report to a Mr. Biggs as I am unfamiliar with this place and wish to know more about my new workplace and duties"

The Dwarf shakes his head when you flip, "I'm Biggs. Your workplace depends on which of the three options I gave a moment ago." He shifts all his weight to his back leg, and begins counting off on his fingers, "If it be guard duty you see, just find a likely place topside and make sure none of those Scalies can damage anything or kill any of the miners. For some reason they keep sending their sick and their frail at us to test our defenses. If it be clean out, than you want to head into the door with the bells on it. Something is living in there, and it killed two miners last week. If you're up for some exploration, than head down shaft fifteen. We found a natural cavern that goes off for quite a while, but we don't know if anything dangerous is living in there yet. More importantly, we don't know if there are any gemstones or ore veins that we can get to easily. So what will it be?"

<hallucination> Upon Bigg's mention of gemstones Avarice jumps into Orellow's view. "Gemstones!?" We're soooo there!" She says to Biggs. Orellow sits on the Cart. "He can't hear you" he reminds her, rolling his eyes. "Well, tell him!" She orders turning to face Orellow. "We came here to Guard so that's what we're doing" Orellow folds his arms and says this in his that's final tone. Avarice sighs and walks up to sit beside him. "Okay" She says. Orellow shakes his head and looks at her. "Huh!?" he asks in disbelief. "You are right, we came here to do a job and kill a bunch of sick and old lizards like the Rangers we are" Orellow opens his mouth to speak but Avarice continues. "I mean Dad would be disappointed in us if we chose to explore the possibly dangerous and unknown instead of guarding like we should" Avarice says nonchalantly. "Now, wait, I just meant-" Orellow starts but gets cut off. "I mean, men have been killed in one of the tunnels so I guess they can explore the others for themselves, they surely don't need us with our years of fighting experience down there in the unknown, I'm sure those non combatant miners can handle whatever is down there all on their own". Orellow stands up straight and moves back to Biggs "Not on my watch' Orellow growls and Avarice grins like a Cheshire cat before fading away. </hallucination>
When Biggs finishes, Orellow seems to go into a meditative state for a while. After a bit he comes to and looks back at Mr. Biggs. "I'll take up exploring, if there's anything worth while down there, I'll find it" He grins and takes off via the most fun route possible.

Orellow: Looking above each tunnel entrance, you notice that there is a number etched into the stone. Winding your way up the ramp until you find the one marked '15', you enter the tunnel follow the torches through a short mine shaft. Every ten feet or so there is a wooden archway to offer support to the surrounding stone. The hallway intersects a large natural cavern, and you have to stop to light your lantern. Once lit, you can see that the cavern is larger than your lantern can illuminate. The cavern is roughly rectangular, with a light angle to the walls like a rhombus. The tunnel breaches the cavern wall about twenty feet up, but the wall offers many handholds and shouldn't be too difficult to climb. (DC 10, fail by 5 or more and you fall.) From the base you can head alone the wall to the left, or to the right, or go directly across the room without a wall to help you keep your bearings.

The walls and floor of the cavern are natural rock, untouched by the tools of the races of man. As such they are rough, with jutting stone protrusions to catch a toe, or outcroppings to bang against if you're not careful. The ceiling is roughly forty feet above your head, and the room is utterly dark aside from what your lantern illuminates. Once you start walking you see that the ground at the far edge of your light begins to look odd, coming a few feet closer you make out mould, moss and other larger fungal masses. Even the walls show signs of growth, as if the growth is spreading from the far corner of the room.

Lyle makes his way to the entrance to find Biggs, he slips through narrow cracks in the walls to get there at a quicker pace, from the entrance he can see the sinkhole is enormous. "Biggs...Biggs." Lyle yells into the entrance.

The Dwarf Biggs stands openly on a wooden platform, an empty wagon and another Dwarf stand beside him. Biggs says, "You can run along any time. Whatever you find, report back to me here. Don't be trying to mine anything on your own now, you will just collapse the tunnels in on yourself. There is a finders fee, so you won't be leaving empty handed. Tunnel fifteen now, if you hurry you might just catch the acrobatic one."
Biggs turns to you Lyle as you call for him, "I'm Biggs, why can't you adventurers travel together? I hate repeating myself." He pauses to take a deep breath, than rambles off, "Guard duty, clean out, or exploration? If it be guard duty you see, just find a likely place topside and make sure none of those Scalies can damage anything or kill any of the miners. For some reason they keep sending their sick and their frail at us to test our defenses. If it be clean out, than you want to head into the door with the bells on it. "As much as id love to stand topside and be in the heart of the battle i believe my true calling to be exploration of such a cavern for i do not fear the unknown i embrace what is to be learned" Lyle says to Biggs boldly. A moment of worry crosses Lyles face as he considers what creatures may survive in the cavern below the depths of the mine but shrugs it off and waits patiently for further direction.

Biggs looks confused, then impatient, "Uh, like I said exploration is down tunnel fifteen." He points above the tunnel closest at the number marker, then points up the ramp. "Look at the numbers, and go in the one with a one and a five beside each other." He rolls his eyes and walks back into the nearest tunnel, yelling, "Why is the empty cart still on the platform, Jerry and Sam get your..." His voice trails off as he gets further into the tunnel. A short time later two miners run out to grab the cart and wheel it into the tunnel.
Knuckles, you will arrive about five minutes after Orellow, and Lyle will arrive about two minutes after that. You boys can react to the descriptions I already gave to Orellow.

Orellow stops to examine the growth (Survival: 14+4=18) and if he finds nothing odd about it, like it being poisonous (or it coming to life and eating his face), he continues using all of his senses for any approaching danger (Refer to earlier 23). Mushrooms? Maybe a food source for something less than savory best to be ready. He thinks and draws his shield holding his lamp with his free hand.

As the brightness of your light falls upon one of the larger fungal masses, it begins to scream. A piercing shriek that echoes off the walls. The sound is so loud that you think even Biggs back at the platform could hear it. (and you would be right.) Knuckles and Lyle, you both hear the sound. Knuckles, you hear it as you walk down the first sixty foot tunnel before the twenty foot drop to the cavern Orellow is in. Lyle, you would hear it just as you turn away from Biggs.

When the common lamp hits the ground it shatters, the oil inside spreading into a three foot pool of flaming liquid. The light is reduced from fifteen feet of bright light and as much dim to a five foot bubble of dim light. You get a better understanding of just how dark it is down here. That is to say, very dark. The ear rending screech continues for another almost a half minute before it begins to quiet down. You can see that the oil will only last a short time more, perhaps a minute if you're lucky.

"Very well then Mr. Biggs number 15 it is. A good day to you. I am off to find all of the mineral wealth this mine can offer me. By chance could I happen to acquire a pick?" Said with a sly smile upon my face.
After being refused upon my pick request, I turn and quickly head for the location of the screaming. "What the heck is making all of that god awful racket?" I saw as I move into the area.

Knuckles, you are refused. Also warned that you will be searched when you leave the tunnels to make sure you're not pilfering any gemstones that rightfully belong to the merchants guild. Orellow, despite the disadvantage of the dim lighting, your blade bites deeply into the creature. It continues to scream, but now the scream is even higher pitch than before. Another piercing wail joins it from somewhere in the darkness to your right. You sense a lumbering movement in the darkness ahead of you. It's too dark to make out what could be there, but you get the sensation that it's as big as you are. Tiny specks begin to float in the air around you, and then you feel a presence in your mind. 'Stop. Attacking.' The words were not words exactly, but images that your mind assigned words to. The images showed you fighting a shrieking fungal mass, and then you sheathed your sword as a massive mushroom man walks toward you. The perspective is set from the vantage of the mushroom man. Your ring grows warm, and you get the feeling that it has been activated. You somehow know that you can block out the images through it if you so chose. OOC: You can communicate telepathically with this creature, but in images instead of words. The instruction 'stop attacking' wasn't a command backed by magic, you still have free will, and no saves are required for any effects currently affecting you. Your ring can prevent telepathic communication if you wish it to do so. Shrieker hp6, second Shrieker hp13. Myconid hp22. Images: MyconidShrieker

Orellow disengaged the mushroom, jumping back out of its reach and holds his shield up in the direction he thinks the mushroom man is. His blade over his head as he holds his battle stance. He remembers his ring of mind shielding and hopes its working. "Who is there!? Reveal yourself and your intentions" He orders, readying his blade to strike at the first sign of attack. "I wont be easily dissuaded by pretty pictures, nor will I sheathe my blade to creatures who continue to assault my senses". Orellow repeats this via telepathy. Showing images of himself holding his ears and being attacked and of images of himself relaxing his guard after the creature quiets down and shows it has no ill intentions.

Orellow, the image filled presence returns, "Calm." and both the ear shattering wails end immediately. "We. No. Name." You get a series of dozens of images showing each member of his circle, and you guess that with this form of communication names wouldn't really be needed. The creature waits in the darkness, you get the feeling you are being watched, possibly by more than just the one you know about.
Knuckles, you wind your way up the ramp until you find the one marked '15'. Entering the tunnel you follow the torches through a short mine shaft. Every ten feet or so there is a wooden archway to offer support to the surrounding stone. After about sixty feet the hallway intersects a large natural cavern, to your left you see a small roundish fire about five feet in diameter. The fire offers the barest light to the surrounding area. Not needing light because of your darkvision, you can see that the cavern is large. The far walls further away than you can see. The cavern is roughly rectangular, with a light angle to the walls like a rhombus. The tunnel breaches the cavern wall about twenty feet up, but the wall offers many handholds and shouldn't be too difficult to climb. (DC 10, fail by 5 or more and you fall.) From the base you can head along the wall to the left toward the fire, or venture to the right along the wall, or go directly across the room without a wall to help you keep your bearings.

He sheathes his blade and stands up straight, keeping his shield on and trying to peer into the darkness to see whoever or whatever he's talking with. "I am Orellow, the seeker of truths, what is it you want?" Orellow scans the darkness, uneasy being at such a disadvantage.

An imageless feeling bombards your senses, one of confusion. As that feeling fades, fresh images of you, blade in hand hacking into the larger fungal mass. This time the focal point of the images is on the wound in the fungal mass, and the severed fibers that make up it's stalk. There is a throbbing pain sensation, not direct pain -as in hurting you- but you get the feeling that the thing you hacked into was injured by your assault.
The images change, and your mind tries to explain what the creature is sending by providing images from your memories. You know the creature isn't reading your thoughts, just your brain trying to make sense of alien thoughts. The shrieking fungal mass you attacked is replaced by a barking dog behind a farmer's fence, it's noise used to keep people from going where they shouldn't. The mushroom man is replaced by a farmer, going out to check what it's dog is barking at. Your mind provides words for more images, "Want. Nothing." A short pause, than a questioning image translation, "Desire?"

Orellow looks back at the fungus he slashed. Or at least the part of the darkness he thinks the mushroom is in. He then rubs the back of his head, abashed with shame. "Well, damn..." He mutters to himself he then takes a deep breath and turns back to the mushroom man. Or at least where he thinks the mushroom man is. He projects his feelings, shame, mostly. He sends the image of an adventurer seeing a hostile animal in the darkness and attacking on instinct only to find it was the farmers dog. He shows great sadness for attacking the 'shroom. Images of the adventurer crying over the dogs wounded body. He sends images of men attacking the mushrooms and Orellow himself coming in to defend them . This is how Orellow sees himself as a protector. He sends images of his father and him slaying bandits to protect hapless townsfolk and wildlife. Finally, he wanders through the dark to the mushroom he attacked, unable to know if he can even be understand, he apologizes. He never wanted to cause harm.
He clears his throat and his thoughts and he turns back to the mushroom man. He sends images of fat men, chasing after food. Of quiet men looking for a spot to be left alone. He sends images of killers looking for things to kill. Adventurers looking for treasure. These are desires. It is what you want. What you wish for in life. He sends images of Mr. Biggs and the Miners, how they desire to take gems and ore from the caves to help their city and theselves and how they sent Orellow to find such things. They will bring lights that will cause the Mushrooms to shriek again, and it will undoubtedly cause more confusion and maybe even death this time. He sends images of the mushrooms dead around the mushroom man, at the hands of the miners and other adventurers. This cannot be the Farmer's desire. So, what is? He asks.
