Zeke's heart starts thumping in his chest, he may have finally found the thief from earlier that morning. Although it kind of seems odd to him, almost like a trap, for a man that spent so much effort to avoid being caught earlier would stand waiting in plain sight. His hand falls to rest on the handle of his morningstar, ready to pull it from his belt at any time.
Surveying his surroundings, Zeke looks for any sign of a trap. After looking around he seems to be frozen in place, not able to tear his eyes away from the person facing him. Eventually after what seems like eternity has passed, when in reality it has only been a few seconds, Zeke is able to start putting one foot in front of the other again. Zeke calls for Atlas to heel, and slowly Master and companion approach the stranger that is waiting for them.

As you approach you can see the area is fairly clear, and the chances that anything or anyone is laying in wait to ambush you is small. The fellow ahead of you remains standing exactly as he was before, and as you get closer her reminds you somewhat of the statue you saw yesterday. You get within thirty feet and you realize that the person in front of you is in fact a statue. This statue is carved with the incredible detail of the last one, and upon close inspection you can see that the subject of these statues must have been the same. This statue also has the two inch long puckered scar near it's wrist, and all of it's other features are the same as well. One part of the statue catches your eye, it's weapon is a battle axe. A battle axe that is really well made, it could be of master work quality in fact. One side of the blade has a crest of some kind engraved on it, maybe a family or clan sigil. The same exact weapon you had stolen from you last night, however this one is clearly made of stone, and part of this statue.

Zeke walks around the statue a few times to take a closer inspection, after the third time around the statue he stops at its back to inspect the battle axe again. He is fighting thoughts in his brain that keep yelling at him, finally he yields to the most likely solution and the words fall from his lips in a whisper, "Magic..." Zeke wants to stay around and see if he is correct in his assumption, maybe make a camp here and wait and see if the statue of stone turns to flesh.
He paces once more around the statue and decides against it, if he believed this was really a thief he may take the risk, but in reality he was the thief and this thing was just taking back what rightfully belonged to it. Plus the risk, he does not yet feel safely out of reach of the dangers of Urutah Valley, he must keep moving. He pulls a trail provision out of his pack, snapping it in half he extends his hand down to Atlas and rewards him for a job well done. The other half he starts to bite into as he continues on the trail taking steps toward his new future, away from the horrors of Urutah Valley.

Your day goes uneventfully for the first five hours of travel, again you're struck by how tough a climb these mountain paths can be. To climb an elevation of only a hundred feet or so can take an hour of walking back and fourth on switch backs, or lifting or carrying Atlas up parts of the path that he couldn't physically climb himself. All in all you think you've managed almost six miles so far today. If this were flat ground, you suspect you could have made at least fifteen miles in the same amount of time.
You chose this time to take a break because you have a choice to make, and no matter which way you choose to go you can foresee difficulties ahead. The pass splits here, with two paths forking off the main path you've been following. The one path continues in much the same way as you have been travelling so far, switchbacks climbing the mountain with a lot of lateral movement. While the other path seems much more level, and sloping upward along the curve of the mountain side. The entrance to this second path is guarded by two piles of stones, one on each side of the path. Sticking up from the pile of stones is a broken spear thrust through a humanoid skull. The choice is yours.

Zeke looks at the skull, its meaning immediatly apparent, whatever is ahead on this pass wants no trespassers and this is its warning. Zeke takes to a knee beside Atlas to rest his weary legs. He runs his hands along his companions back and legs to help alleviate any pain he is feeling from the travels, although the dog seems to be in better shape than its master. Zeke pulls his canteen from his belt and takes a long draught, after quenching his own thirst he cups his hand in front of Atlas and slowly pours water into his hand as the dog laps it up.
Zeke continues to kneel, his head swiveling back and forth between the two possible routes, unsure which route to choose. Finally he rises to his feet, still unsure but he has made a desicion. His hand slides down to the hilt of his morningstar as him and Atlas pass the pile of stones and impaled skull, the nice level path was too tempting not to pass up. ___________________________________________________ Awareness: 1d20+6=14+6=20

The choice made, you cross between the stacked stones with spiked skulls protruding from them. The way is level, and the path is nowhere near as difficult as it was before. Your chosen route ascends the mountainside, and you find yourself huffing and puffing from the steepness of the grade. You still make excellent time however, since you no longer have to pick and chose your way through the broken stones that littered the pass before.
Ahead you notice markings on the rock face, and the pass becomes more of an open faced cliff side. To your right you can see the mountain extending far above you, and to your left you can see the quick route down, a four hundred foot drop to the stone below.
Ahead you notice that the rock face has the silhouettes of several small figures. Sneaking a little closer you notice that the figures are just drawings on the side of the mountain. A small overhang protecting the drawings from the elements. Several large boulders are laid out in a semi-circle facing the carvings, and you notice that the boulders have been carved into the likeness of chairs. The chairs have etchings of dragons upon them.
You also notice a couple of small figures on a ledge above the drawings, they are hunkered down to avoid notice, but you managed to catch sight of them by the sun reflecting off of something shiny. The path here is about ten feet wide, and the ledge the figures are huddled upon is about ten feet off the ground.

Zeke crouches down beside Atlas, putting his index finger to the ground in front of Atlas' nose and the dog lays down beside him. Zeke looks behind him and then back to the figures crouched on the ledge. He has two options here, turn back and go the rough way or move forward and see what happens. After the village, Zeke is sick of feeling like a craven and decides that his path lays forward.
Now with a decision made he tries to figure out the best way to execute it, likely the sentries have already spotted him so moving forward under the cover of night is pointless. There is no way he can reach the sentinels if they are enemies before they could rain down projectiles on Atlas and himself. He decides the best course of action is to move forward looking as non-threatening as possible.
Zeke stands and Atlas stands beside him, his hand resting on the pommel of his morningstar he starts to move forward slowly keeping a constant eye on the crouched figures. As he approaches he tries to better discern what or who is resting on the ledge above the drawings and whether or not they are a threat to himself and his companion.

As you walk along the path the creatures abruptly jerk erect, and take cover behind the edge of the ledge. A moment later, a piercing whistle rends the air from the ledge. A flock of birds scatter at the sudden noise, flying off into the sky where they circle to see what all the fuss is about. You hesitate a moment, but the creatures remain hidden behind the edge of the ledge. Nothing moves except you and Atlas. Do you press forward, remain here, or something else?

Zeke pauses at the sound of the whistle, not sure what the full meaning of it is but knows that it was probably some form of warning to whatever or whomever lives around here. At this point turning on his heel and running is not really an option, or at least a valid option. Whatever was up on that ledge probably knows this mountain better and can traverse it a lot better than himself.
Zeke continues forward until he reaches the boulders arranged in a semi-circle, here he stops to closer inspect the drawings on the wall. He takes a seat on one of the boulders and waits, watching the ledge above him and the path ahead of him. He sits here resting his body from the days climb, all the while his mind racing thinking about what or who was on that ledge and what he has gotten himself into. Zeke waits a while to see if anybody or anything is going to come greet him after his presence was announced, but it seems the day's travels and trials have worn on him and he finds himself staring blankly at the drawing on the rock face. If nothing comes after half an hour he gets up and continues up the path.

The drawings are crude, but show simple images of humanoids dancing around a quadruped that is larger than the humanoids. You can't really tell how large or small anything is, because there is no real sense of scale to the images. While you study the images, you note movement above you, but when you look up there is nothing there. You think whatever is on the ledge above must have been spying on you. Less than a minute later you hear the sound of excited voices coming from further along the pass. You stand, and move to the center of the path to meet whomever is coming. Rounding the corner ahead is a Black Bear, who rears up onto his hind legs when he sees you and roars loudly enough that small rocks cascade down the rock face. You barely notice a half dozen small humanoids behind the bear when it drops back onto all fours and charges. Roll Init.

Zeke stands abruptly at the sound of the raucous coming from further up the path, upon sight of the bear and the small humanoid he decides it's time to pull his morningstar from his belt. Gripping his weapon tightly in both hands, Zeke and Atlas move to meet their opponent's charge with one of their own. Running side by side, adrenaline pumping, Zeke begins to try and figure out the best way to attack this four legged beast. But before Zeke has time to form any plan of attack the bear is almost upon them and Zeke finds his weapon involuntarily raising over his head readying to come down upon the bear's head with all his strength.
As Atlas runs beside him he emits a low growl and his teeth bared, the fur on his haunches standing straight up. Getting closer to the bear he starts to do small weaves, looking for the perfect place to strike the bear's carrauted artery. _________________________________________________________________ Init (Zeke): 1d20+1=20+1=21 Init (Atlas): 1d20+3=8+3=11

The courage you show in charging the Black Bear is rewarded, just as the creature finds it's feet and begins to charge the two of you smash into it. Your weapon thuds solidly into the side of the bear's head, while Atlas latches his teeth into one of the bear's muscled front legs.
The Black Bear is a hardy creature, and although you dazed it for a moment with the strength of your attack, it's retaliation is quite ferocious. The Black Bear hops toward you and tries to smash your head between it's two claws, but the weight of Atlas hanging from it's arm buys you just enough time to step back and avoid one of it's mighty paws. Your studded leather prevents you from being slashed to ribbons, but the force of the blow staggers you. (7 damage) The Black Bear then snaps it's jaws around Atlas' shoulders and twists, tossing him a few feet away. The ragged wound left behind quite serious. (7 damage)
The three of you take a few steps back from one another, reappraising your foes. All of the combatants are seriously wounded. What do you do now?

Seeing no other option, Zeke tries to finish off his opponent with another 2 handed swing of his morningstar. The swing alone creates a shooting pain in his chest where the bear's paw had hit him, but he perserveres and attempts to follow through with his swing.
Taking from his master's lead, Atlas once again lunges at the bear attempting to take a chunk out of its flesh.

The two of you attack in tandem once again, and the strength of your blows proves too much for the Black Bear to withstand. The bear collapses onto one side from it's wounds, tongue lulling out of it's mouth, and eyes staring blankly. The small humanoids scream in anguish and horror, and then their cries turn to terror when they realize that you defeated their champion. They scatter up the pass, and out of sight. You are no longer in initiative order. (600xp)

Zeke kneels beside his defeated foe, laying a hand on the bear's ribs he feels its breaths are short and shallow. He thinks back to the few times that he went hunting with his father and wishes he had his father's hunting knife, then he could put this poor beast out of its misery and puts its pelt and flesh to some use. Instead Zeke stands and grabs the bear by its legs and starts rolling it toward the edge of the cliff. Once on the edge he sits beside it, puts his feet into its belly and shoves the bear over the edge with a hard kick of his legs.
With the bear gone Zeke turns his attention to Atlas, checking the wound where the bear sunk its teeth into his companion's soft flesh. Seeing that the wound is deep but will likely heal of its own accord, Zeke rises to his feet and starts up the path to see where the frightened small humanoids have went. He keeps his morningstar out in case they have some sort of other trap or "champion" to throw at him.
As he walks he tries to pull up in his mind whether or not the creatures that fled have ever been mentioned by one of the travelers that passed through the bar where he served or in any of the stories told to him by his parents before he went to bed as a child.

The bear is heavy, but you manage to drag it to the edge of the cliff. You sit there panting for a moment from the fading adrenaline rush, your wounds, and the weight of the bear. As you put your boots to it's flesh you hear a growl from Atlas, and a small, panicked voice calls out in broken common, "Wait! No push! No Henry fault. Henry good bear! Gobbies push and poke Henry. Henry have no choice." Turning you see a small humanoid dressed in furs. He has a spear strapped to his back, but he keeps his hands extended, palms up, fingers splayed.
You notice that even though he's speaking with you, the small fellow keeps his attention on Atlas. You recognize his mannerisms, and realize that he's attempting to calm Atlas. To your surprise Atlas stops growling, and sits down. He still eyes the newcomer, but no longer growls at him.

Zeke sits staring at the small humanoid for a moment and decides against shoving the bear over the cliff. He uses his hands to lift himself from the ground and scoots his feet under himself, extending his legs so that he is standing at full height. He stands for another moment in silence glancing from the small person to the bear and back again. "I will not kill Henry if you can guarantee me that your people will grant me safe passage through these mountains... at least safety from your clan or whatever you want to call them..." Zeke waits in silence eying his subject to see if he understands. He also focuses on his peripheral vision to see if the small humanoid is just a distraction.

Atlas seems pretty much relaxed, even though the little creature is so close by. Keeping your awareness on the surrounding area you see no sign of hidden enemies or potential traps being set for you. After about a minute Atlas stops paying the little guy any attention at all, and instead focuses on licking his various wounds.
The little humanoid looks worried, and chews his bottom lip briefly, "Me can't, me no part of tribe. Just me, just Henry." the creatures eyes turn pleading, "You no push Henry, Henry good bear. Henry good bear, like wolf good wolf." he says, gesturing to Atlas. "You no push, and me glowy hands you wolf." he smiles like that's the best idea he's ever had. "What you say? Good trade, yes?"

"Mmmm..." Zeke ponders what the little person has said. The last time he saw 'glowy hands' was when Old Lady Medilian made her hands glow to show him magic, maybe this little guy could heal Atlas' wounds. "If this is any sort of trick you will be going over this cliff with Henry" Zeke points with his thumb over his shoulder to the vast expanse of nothingness behind him. "Make it quick and use your 'glowy hands' so I can be on my way..."Zeke stands close to the bear in case this little creature tries anything fishy, and watches closey to see what it will do with Atlas.

The small humanoid begins to chant in a language similar to what Old Lady Medilian used while teaching you magic. You see the strands of magical energy slowly begin to weave around him, steadily growing brighter and brighter. After a few seconds the little fellow's hands begin to glow a soft blue white. He extends his hands toward Atlas, and when Atlas extends his nose to smell what he is offering the energy dissipates into Atlas. The wounds in Atlas's body knit themselves shut somewhat (3hp), and the little guy smiles, looking quite proud of himself.

"Thank you, although after sending this killer towards us," motioning toward the bear, "I won't say we didnt deserve your help." As Zeke tries to swallow his anger with the situation he was just in, and the regret for putting his companion in harms way, he tries to map out his next steps. "Come with us and bring Henry, it seems as though you would like to get out of here as much as I do. This can be beneficial for both of us, you know the mountains and I can help protect you from the clan you are not part of."
Although Zeke is still harboring strong disdain for the little person, he realizes that his emotions mean little when it comes to survival. It is his gut he has to trust and his gut is telling him that moving forward through these mountain passes is going to be dangerous. A helping hand or befriended bear will not hurt him in the least. "I can stay here, guard you while you use those white hands on Henry and then we can move on, what do you say?"

The little one shakes his head vehemently, "No, no, me would be branded traitor of me people. Then outcast from all clans." He makes a wide all encompassing gesture with both hands. "You go with wolf. They scared of Henry. You beat Henry. They scared of you now." He nods once as if that explains everything, "Me go back to own clan. Me no find mate here anyway." He shrugs, not seeming to care whether he found a mate or not.
He moves over beside Henry, slowly so you don't think he's being hostile. Once there he begins to cast another spells, and once more the weave of magical energy surrounds him. The first time he casts the weave goes away and his hands do not glow. He scrunches up his face in disgust, and begins casting again to better effect. His hands glow briefly, and he channels some magical energy into Henry.
Henry shakes his head, and scrambles to his feet. The little man grabs the bear by both of his ears and pulls his massive head down so Henry is looking him in the eye. Some quiet words are exchanged and Henry sits on his haunches. The little guy looks over his shoulder and smiles reassuringly, but you note that he doesn't let go of Henry's ears either.

"Suit yourself, I guess I will just keep moving along." Zeke watches closely as the little guy heals his bear and then calms it as it wakes up. Amazed at this things skill for taming aggresive animals, Zeke sits and stares at the two of them for a short period in astonsihment.
After getting over his amazement Zeke checks all his equipment is in place and motions for Atlas to heel. With Atlas close behind him Zeke starts of down the path, not sure what is around the bend he keeps his morningstar in hand and repeatedly rolls his wrist causing the weapon to do small spins in his palm. Out of earshot of the little man Zeke starts conversing with his companion, "well buddy, I don't know whats next for us, I sure wasn't expecting a bear attack. I don't even know what the heck that little guy was..." Zeke's speech trails off as it always seems to do when talking to Atlas, it is hard to keep a one sided conversation going. Zeke instead tries to focus on the trail ahead, getting ready for anymore surprises, but all he can think about is the bruises on his legs and chest from fighting with a bear.

(Passing a DC 12 Knowledge Local will let you know that all the small humanoids were in fact Goblins. Also, if you want to make a DC 15 Knowledge Local check you can identify another creature you've 'encountered.')
"I be sure dat we meet again Wolf Man. Be careful in passes, da Horde knows that you be in the mountains now. Dey will test your strength again." Henry growls while the little fellow is distracted by talking, and the little fellow actually flicks his nose. Even Henry seems surprised at this turn of events. From here you realize that that little man's head would fit entirely within Henry's closed mouth if the bear so desired to end the little man's existence.
Rounding the corner you see that the path along the cliff continues for a while. The ledge itself gets as wide as fifteen feet across, and as narrow as five feet across. The left side of the path ends in a steep sided cliff, while the right side extends up in a rough wall that ranges from ten feet tall in places, all the way to over a hundred feet tall in others. There are piles of rocks gathered in places, some of which create a short wall across the path. You approach these with caution, as they would be much easier to defend, but all such defences seem abandoned. Once after passing one such wall you look back, and see that small humanoids man the defenses once again.
You do see the occasional little humanoid hiding within the rocks, but they don't seem like they are waiting in ambush. More likely they just don't want you to notice that they are hiding at all. After you first spot your first hidden creature within the rocks along the right wall, you examine those rocks more closely. You see several more along the way, but all seem to be hiding from you, rather than hiding to attack you. Some of their hiding places are no better than standing behind a rock that covers most of their bodies, while others you only notice because the tip of a sheathed weapon, or a boot lace hangs out.
The path "T" junctions, and you can continue straight, or turn to your right and head between two larger hills. The path ahead is marked with small piles of stones with sticks sticking out of them. The sticks have small skulls mounted upon them, and these skulls have been dyed red. The path to the right has pyramids of larger stones, which have been tooled to be square. Each pyramid consists of three stones, and resting on top of each is a skull. The path you're leaving has similar markers as the ones you saw before entering this pass in the first place.

Zeke is not sure what to make of these Goblins. Are they just willing to accept that he is their superior? In his bafflement he decides to just continue to move forward, trying to keep his eyes out for any ' tests of strength.' Coming to the 'T' junction he stops for a moment trying to make some logical desicion out of something that probably can have no logical meaning. ' Well these randomly piled stones are less organized then these carefully tooled ones. Maybe that means any traps or attacks down this path will be more easily foiled.' Not applying much wisdom to his desicion, whether it is from fatigue or the altitude, Zeke heads straight ahead. Staring at the painted skulls as he passes Zeke's thoughts wander, ' I wonder how many have walked this path before me, am I going to make it to wherever I am headed? Will I see my family again?' Zeke's mind starts to spiral into despair, but he instead makes himself focus on the path ahead trudging onward and pulls his mind out of the blackness. _______________________________________________________________________________________________ DC12 Knowledge: 1d20+1=11+1=12 DC 15 Knowledge: 1d20+1=4+1=5 Random rolls incase you need them: 5d20: 2,8,14,18,7

(I used the 2 as a perception check, which failed to see what was lurking nearby. I used the 8 as a perception check as well, which did notice something. The 14, 18, and 7 I will save for a rainy day)
Crossing the T junction, you glance up the path to your right and see nothing of consequence lurking nearby. As you head up into the new pass, you do notice a pile of rocks across the path. This pile seems much like the piles you crossed in the last path. You know that these are used as defensive barricades, and as such you watch the stones carefully for any signs of life. It only takes a few seconds to spot the brown leather cap moving between two stones to know that there are more goblins nearby.

At the sight of the brown cap Zeke quickly crouches. When Atlas sees his master move into a stealthier form of travel he follows suit and starts to move slowly watching the same pile of rocks that Zeke is. The two of them side by side attempt to sneak up on the defensive barricade, at their approach Zeke takes a quick glance at his surrounding area to see if there are others lurking nearby.
When they are about ten feet away Zeke leaps to his feet and quickly closes the gap between himself and the barrier, placing a hand on the wall he easily throws his legs over and lands beside the ambusher. Atlas not far behind leaps over the wall just as easily and lands facing the goblin with his teeth bared and a low gutteral growl rumbling in his throat.

Glancing about you see about a dozen Goblins lurking nearby, all of them attempting to stay out of your line of sight. The cap you were sneaking up on reveals a Goblin face as it peeks over the barricade, when it sees you seeing it, it bolts into a small nook in the side of the wall. You both sneak up on the nook, but when you get there you only find a narrow tunnel leading into the mountain. Atlas starts into the tunnel, intent on Goblin flesh before you call him back. Watching the Goblin's watching you, you get the feeling that they really don't want anything to do with you. Any Goblin that you make eye contact with, looks away or attempts to hid themselves better.

Frustrated at missing his catch and little curious as to where the tunnel leads, Zeke and Atlas stand for moment at its mouth staring into the darkness. Realizing that the Goblin is unlikely to return and looking around noticing the other Goblins feinted disinterest, Zeke decides it best to keep moving. He starts away from the cave with purpose, steping over the small walls as he comes to them he marches up the mountain's path. Every now and then Zeke peels his eyes from the path and looks at the surrounding cliffs and crevices to make sure the Goblins have not changed their minds about their disinterest.
After a while Zeke's purposeful steps lull him into a trancelike state and his mind starts to wander, mainly he starts to think about his sister and mother. Old Lady Medilian's reassuring words earlier provide little comfort as he starts to picture soldiers barging in on his sleeping mother and sister, quickly his thoughts switch to a picture of them in shackles in a dingy cold dungeon. Coming back to reality Zeke notices his pace has quickened, looking down at his side Atlas treks onward with his mouth open and tongue hanging out, seeming as purpose driven as Zeke feels.

Everytime you turn to face them they scatter into their cubby holes, there must be hundreds of interconnected tunnels along this cliff face for them to hide in. You guess that those tunnels are all that keep the relatively weak Goblins from being decimated by more powerful races. After a time you reach another set of skulls that match the set for this Goblin tribe. The pass forks again here, continuing forward and further up, or branching right and almost immediately entering a large dark tunnel. Which path would you like to follow. Also, at some point you will need to rest at some point today.
